Fortunately, you can try the same trick yourself before buying the door; just use your arm and see how long you can stretch it through the trap door in an attempt to reach the approximate distance of your door knob. If you can reach your doorknob, obviously the door is not safe. For most cases, the smaller animals work best for safe pet doors.

Usefulness

One of the advantages of getting a pet door installed is that your dog (or cat) will use it ALL the time. Your dog has to be able to go through the door comfortably; don't forget to take into account that young pups will grow very fast.
