Can a American Pit Bull Live With a Rottweiler?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

My Girlfriend wants a Rottweiler and I want a Pit bull… we both want males. Could they live together?

Yes. But they're both dogs with higher aggression than other dogs, and they're both a tad possessive, and they're both male.

Why do you want a male pit? Male rotties do seem to be more outgoing and affectionate (from Google reading, not from personal experience) but I haven't been able to find anyone talking about a division among pit bulls. I'm including a link about pit bull's social development–it says it may take a few years for the dog's temperament to change and problems to surface.

I would advocate buying purebred, getting them at the same time, and telling the breeders you want a line that's as least dog-aggressive as possible. To keep them from guarding their things from each other, have food dishes for each dog, and feed them separately. The same with beds and water dishes: each dog has its own. Don't let either of them up on the furniture, or they might have something to get aggressive with each other over. (Pits were, after all, bred to fight other dogs. They can live with other dogs, but the motto I've heard is "respect the pit" in the dog, which means don't ask the dog to put up with too much against its instincts.)

Put them both through obedience school while they're still puppies. Socialize them extensively with other dogs. Be prepared to do it again a few years down the line, and possibly again after that if the dogs get stubborn. But you'll have well-behaved dogs and a safe household.

It's a lot of work, but, well, you felt you should ask the question in the first place. And like the person above me said, neuter. It's not only for their temperaments, it's for their overall health.

Yes if you get two dog friendly dogs then they'll be able to live together. Getting them both neutered will help.

Both Rottweilers and Pit Bull Terriers have nice dispositions and they should get along together. But consider a few things. Different dogs have different personalities. Also, from the moment they are born, puppies establish a type of pecking order. Make sure your dogs have compatible dispositions and heirarchy places. You sure don't want two alpha dogs – especially two alpha males.

I see no problem they should get along if you let them. Animals got there own way to talk to each other and stand corners

Of course they can…providing you do your part on socializing them well to each other. It would be best to get them both as pups together. It would also help alot to have them neutered.

It is possible. Somethings to consider before getting them is one, do you rent? most landlords will refuse to rent a home or apt to you for both breeds. two, keep in mind that they are both aggressive dogs and they will both be males. three, remember that Pitbulls have had dog aggression bred into them throughout history, so a pitbull that will love other dogs as a puppy might not be so friendly to other dogs when they are an adult (typically between 2 and 3 years of age) so you have to watch the pit very close when he gets older. Also, with pits, it is recommended that you never let them off the leash with strange dogs. A pit may act one way with one dog and another with a different dog (like mine). And if a dog fight occurs, it doesn't matter who started it, your dog will get blamed.

I personally love both breeds and think they are excellent dogs, both are loyal and very loving dogs.

Nope.. male rottie + male pit = vet bills, heartache, kennels, and rehomeing.

Im hoping that this question is bogus. Anyone who randomly advocates this pair for the average pet owner, does not have broad ranging experience with these breeds.

The only way this MAY work long-term is if you get Male/Female and raise them from pups….and have them altered preferably before 6mo. of age.

Even then, you may have problems…you'll be looking at separate feedings, and plenty of yard to run off energy.

Ive known pit bull litter mates to live happily together for years….then one day, a bro and sis, ganged up on the other sis and rippd her apart.

Once you have a violent event, it will continue and escalate over time. Then you will be faced with tough decisions.

I cant even have my males within eye-shot of each other…and I live on 2 acres. Ive had a presa chew through a chain-link kennel to get at another male. Once they lock up there's not much you can do.

to sum up…pet owners have to set aside thier "wants" in favor of logic and common sense. male/female combo with these breeds is the only way that this might work in the average home.

    Gud luck

I think if you get them when they are both puppies they should get along, but definitely get them both fixed so there isnt so much of a fight over dominance. I would suggest getting one female and one male though because the same sexes do tend to fight more often. Good luck and good choice of breeds!
