I have a female Rottweiler who is supposedly half German half American.. The lady I bought her from owns the mother (who is the American) and my dog is identical looking in the face same head etc as her mother. My friend saw her father and was informed he was full blood German but I never seen him. With that I recently took measurements of my dog's height and it came to 21 inches at going on 2 years old? I looked up average height of Rottweilers and it said from 25-27 therefore making my dog 4'' shorter than the lowest height.. I just always wondered what the deal was because everyone i encounter when i take her out mistakes her for a puppy and I'm like nooo she's going on 2 lol Like i said she's identical to her mother but even her mother is like 27-28'' in height and i heard her father was even bigger so how is my dog so small for her breed? I've seen 6 mth old rotties bigger than her.. plz answer
What? So her sire is from germany or her dam? There is only one breed standard for rottweilers, that goes for the whole world. What 'average' gave you those numbers? Females should be 22-25 inches. Its right here in the standard: http://www.akc.org/breeds/rottweiler/index.cfm Did you measure her correctly? Still she is just an inch under the standard, its not so bad. She isn't going to be shown or bred so its not such a big deal.
Her mother is oversized, by far. You more then likely got your dog from a backyard breeder; they often don't care about the standard.

size of parents does not always reflect size of offspring.. there may be smaller dogs in the pedigree that have contributed to her small size.

she was probably just the runt of the litter. I wouldn't worry unless she has health problems.

Dogs under or over the desired height or weight for breeding and showing happen all the time. Its called genetics. She's a pet quality rottweiler and not show quality. Does it matter? No, so why fuss about it?

The AKC standard states Bitches–22 inches to 25 inches, with preferred size being mid-range of each sex.So your female is on the small side.My first rottweiler female was only 22 inch and she was from Champion parents..Size comes from not only parents but grandparents, ect.

I have a nearly identical situation with my female rottweiler. She was the product of what the breeders called an “accidental” breeding of 2 champion, and gigantic rottweilers. Her size is nearly the same as yours and her energy levels are absolutely through the roof! In fact Its practically impossible for me to keep any meat on her bones and she eats like a horse. I was really worried for a while but she is healthy and its just genetics I guess. At any rate, she wont have to carry as much body weight so wont be as prone to bone problems in the future. At least that’s what I tell my self….
hey my dog is vary small for her size as well she is 1 years old as of dec.18.2009 she looks as if she is five months old her mother and father and grandparants were all huge mother bout 27inches high father bout 30 same wit grandparants idk why but i am takin her to the vet to get her all checked out cuz her brothers and sisters are all big she is not the runt wat so eva so idk
I also have a 15 female which I was worried about untill recently. My problem had been her head size but I’ve been told that some rottweiler only begin to put on some bulk later on in life.
Standards aside I really think some of these feature are from the original genetic make up of the breed, before the standards bred them out. According to the history of the breed, there used to be much taller rottweilers and of many different colors too there used to be much bigger and I think breeders should consider widening again.
I meant breeders should consider widening the genetic pool again
