German Line GSD or American Rottweiler for Protection?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I had two Rottweilers and my male was taken by my ex. I am looking for more of a protection/ easier to train male dog. My female rotteiler is pretty stubborn, although I keep training. I got in touch with a local breeder of German line GSD. All his dogs are specifically trained and come from great lines. Any advice? Go back to my rott or German Shepard with three kids to protect.

get a gun or an alarm system

you protect the dog the dog does not protect you

*sighs* is this dog going to be around your kids all the time? Waste of several thousand dollars if you ask me. Where as they could take self defense class and you could invest in a home security system. Trust me if someone is determined to hurt you and your family they will go through BOTH these dogs.

Answer: NEITHER if you aren’t going to spend the money and time to find a qualified breeder who breeds for protection work and pay for the training if you don’t get an adult.

actually, not saying this just because you shouldnt buy from a breeder, but you can get an adult from a shelter. many of them(80%) come from families with children. they are friendly with children, most are already trained, and ALL are protective of their families. you rescue them, and they repay you. good luck =]

Rottweilers are WAY better with kids…. German Shepards i say are better watch dogs for your property but if you have small kids i would stick with a Rottweiler 10 times over and train it right.

There is no such thing as an American Rottweiler, Rotts originated in Germany (all of them) just because they were born in the US does not make them American. Same with GS.

No telling which would make a better protection dog. Both Rotts and GS can make great protection dogs. People will tell you that there are no good females which is BS as either can exceed if the drive is there.

You need to have the individual dog tested by the protection trainer to see if it has the right drive and temperament. Your best bet is to have a professional trainer help you select a puppy.
I do hope you don’t think you can do protection training by yourself.

Both dogs are excellent protectors can’t go wrong with either. Personally I prefer a lab to alert me and a .44 mag for protection dogs are great but me and my guns are more reliable.

It is all about trust between you and your dog. If you are the No 1 in the pack and he/she is handled only by you no problem what so ever. Sometimes you won’t have time to reach for your gun ! so for reliable protection get yourself a good guard dog.
