Note American Pitbull are banned
But American Staffordshire Terriers
Staffordshire Bull Terrier are NOT banned
Sad to see them in the news again tonight-for two seperate dogs attacks. The pitbull is banned breed in australia already. I think there actually great dogs, so are the Rottweiler. I know A rotty that taken for walks by 12-13years old, like a loyal labrador-very affectionate.
How can we stop the negative reputation of such great breeds?
How can we educated others that its not the breed at fault but the owners?
I plan to adopt a rescue Rotty or Rotty mix in the future.
GREAT pets in the hands of the right owners. No such thing as a bad dog, just a bad dog owner.
How can we stop the bad reputation of these breeds? Keep them out of the hands of idiots. I think people should have to take classes and be certified to own pit bulls and rottweilers. And this needs to be legally ENFORCED, or it will be meaningless. Prove you know what the hell you’re doing, or don’t own the dog at all.
p.s. Fact may be that other dogs attack people, but the VAST MAJORITY of deaths by dog attacks have come from pit bulls, rottweilers, dobermans, and German Shepherds. They are, indeed, dangerous dogs in the wrong hands. That is the unfortunate truth of the matter. Again, need to keep them out of reach of idiots.

Killers. Friends and family will be scared, even and although they appear friendly.
Peace.

Luckily where I live (california) the breeds are not banned yet, and I hope it never happens. We have an adorable staffordshire/lab mix at the rescue right now, she’s completely harmless and as sweet as can be. I’d adopt her if I could, but my little dog wouldn’t be too happy with that.
I mainly blame the media. There are dog attacks from other breeds, yet they seem to always zero in on the "bully" breeds. People watch this and drink the media like its wine, therefore they fear and/or hate the breeds more.
Then again, there are stupid people out there who get those dogs just to use them as fighting dogs or "watch dogs" and purposely make them aggressive. Its sickening.
All we can do is create more rescue groups dedicated to educating people to "blame the deed, not the breed". Unfortunately some people will always be close minded.

I’m an Aussie, i had a mate with a pitbull(don’t ask how he had one). It seemed like a good dog. It is terrible they (along withh the Rottweiler) get a bad wrap, it’s not the dog’s that have vicious behavior, it’s the owners that purposely bring it out in them, any dog can turn into something that attacks someone when they are tormented their whole life.
and sadly, getting these dogs a positive reputation isn’t likely, as good a dog as they can be, the public just doesn’t want to here about a dog behaving well and being affectionate as much as one attacking someone.

As long as people keep abusing and mistreating them, I don’t see that happening in the near future. I know Pits and Rotties who are the most stable, most loving dogs I’ve ever seen but they were raised by loving owners in good homes. People are trying to educate the public as much as they can but some just refuse to get over their prejudice against certain breeds and as long as people continue to be small minded and people continue to abuse the breed, the dogs will continue to pay the price for it.

I don’t know much about pitbulls but I had a rotty and so did a friend. They are awesome dogs.
I think most dogs are how they are trained. However, there is that protective streak in them. We had a lab/shepard mix for 9 yrs that was great but very protective. Once she was in her kennel in the garage. The mailman came in the yard and she busted out and cornered him on the porch. So we did the responsible thing and kept her close and watched her when other people were around. She never even hinted at hurting us, our kids, or grandson, just the opposite in fact. She let us know that we were hers. She was wonderful, loving, happy. Just a fantastic dog. She went to heaven to be with Jesus in January of cancer. And she is missed terribly.

I think rottweilers are magnificent lovely animals, that with good breeding and training can be wonderful family pets. That said I think that all dogs should be licenced and all dog owners should be required to do at least a basic obedience class with each dog they own. When the dogs are chipped, the chips can be updated with licence information, obedience class information etc. I have encountered aggressive dogs of all breeds, not just the so called "muscle breeds" and think that more stringent dog ownership laws are the best way forward, not simply banning breeds.

As long as there are ignorant people these dogs will never get a fair chance. I have a rottie and she couldn’t be any sweeter! Sure they are both strong breeds but when trained properly they are great dogs. It strikes me as funny that people are afraid or rotties when more people are bitten by dalmation every year where I live.

I have two Rottweilers, a male and a female. I love them and they are both very loving sweet sweet dogs. However, we have been told that our Male is agressive, allegedly he goes to other people’s yards and terrorizes them. He won’t do it in our yard though. I don’t understand he is soooooo sweet. I don’t know what to believe but several people have told us and we aren’t bad owners like making him mean or anything. However, I think I agree with SMoss232. I also have a Cocker too and I really do think she would bite. We have joked about having two Rotties in the yard, with a beware sign, and the Cocker actually being the one that would bite.

This is another one of those cases of spitting into the wind.
For as long as these two breeds are in the hands of irresponsible and ignorant people that want to be "tough" responsible owners will be punished.
The media does not report when a Golden Retriever, Chihuahua or Black Lab attacks someone. They will, however, trip over themselves to report a Pit Bull (APBT or Pit bull type), GSD, Husky, or Rottie. So unfortunately as far as a trusting public is aware the only types of dogs that bite are the ones named above.
I started a Yahoo! group to try to accomplish what you said. Every time I take my Amstaff out I am an ambassador for the breed. Unfortunately it’s very hard to change people’s stereotypes.
My Amstaff lets my two year old twins take bones and food away from him, he has never jumped on them, knocked them down or ever behaved in a way that would make me concerned for their safety. Ever. My in-laws’ chihuahua is banned from my house and has to be crated when my kids are around because he is so fear aggressive that he will try to lunge through the door of his crate.
Which dog do YOU think needs to be banned?
