What Kind of Dog Should I Get?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I been looking for a breed about a year now.
I came down to

American Bulldog
Labordor retriever
Beagle
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Godlen Retriever
ROttweiler
Giant Schnzuers

a dog that is good with kids, fairly easy to train, not a crazy shedder. One hour walking will be enough exercise.

Note:We are getting a puppy! so please dont say go to shelter!

Thank you

Well, you can train a Rhodesian Ridgeback, but not fairly easily. And you do have some seriously independent breeds listed, especially the Bulldog and the Beagle.

Ridgebacks are good with kids, but if you have children under 4 you will need to monitor them all the time. Ridgebacks think little kids are playmates, and they are very physical when they play.

One hour walking is not enough for a Ridgeback. They like to hike and run off leash for a long time. That might be okay for one that is older than 6 or 7 yrs, though.

I would go visit some breeders of the various breeds and see how your children react to the adults. I require that all families come to visit when I have puppies, so that I can watch how the children behave, and how the parents correct them (if necessary)

My adult dogs also let me know if the family is a good one for Ridgebacks.

Labs are great family dogs, although they do a lot of chewing as puppies.

I would go visit some Golden Retriever breeders. They are easygoing, and easy to train, and want to please. Ridgebacks think it's okay to please you, but it's not high on their list.

I would choose Labrador, because i have one and me and my brother is a child of the family and Labrador's are kind, clever and my dog even can open the kitchen door and the gate! Labradors needs exercise but a bit more than 1 hour walk. They are very easy to train and you may also do a dog show! Labradors are very popular in Australia and they can be guide dogs too!

Labradors are really great with kids and don't shed a ton.
Beagles are also great dogs but i heard they tend to wander off since they are in the hound family and they howl, but otherwise they are really good with all your needs. Lastly the dog that i think is the best one that you like would be a golden retriever but they shed a ton they are good with kids. Based on the things i know about those dogs thats about it. But remember you should do some more research and figure out which one is great for you! Best of luck! and here is a website where it shows puppies for sale. Also if you go to the home page of the website you will find information about certain dog breeds. Here is the website http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/dogs/sale/
    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

The Golden Retriever would be the easiest to train and the best one to have around kids. I'm not sure if it sheds or not. Beagles are known to be mean from what i've heard. Don't think the rott or the ridgeback would work either. Maybe the bulldog if it's trained properly. If you want a puppy you could probably find one on craigslist.com

Golden Retrievers all the way mate! I've had one for years, we started off training him as a guide dog but he developed a serious food allergy so was deemed too high maintenance for a blind person – so we were allowed to keep him! But seriously, not just my dog but all goldens ive met have shared the same characteristics – easy to train, not hypo but not too lazy, and theyre friendly as anything! they do shed a lot of fur though which can make vacuuming a bit of a hastle. They are a very smart dog hence why they are used as guide dogs, and because they are retrievers in nature they will stop at nothing to fetch things – once my dog almost drowned trying to drag a huge log out of the water, and i play a game where i hide something in the house and he goes and finds it. VERY intelligent dogs.

ALL of those breed will require WAY more exercise than an hour of walking.

Labs, Beagles, and GOldens are all working breeds, and will need a job and LOTS of exercise.

Rottweilers and American Bulldogs and Rhodesians are powerful guardian breeds and will need LOTS of training, as well as exercise.

You CAN find puppies at shelters. There are lots of them.

All will shed. Training depends on YOU, not the breed.

Again, AB and Rotts are very powerful, heard-headed breeds and you may feel as though they are a bit more difficult to train. Same goes for Rhodesians.

In summary, every breed listed will need more exercise than you are willing to provide, will shed, and will need lots of exercise and training.

They're all great dogs but as you have kids I would stay away from Rotties and Giant Schnauzers. These dogs are not vicious but they can be a handful, very smart and very likely to be dominant they need a strong leader.

Labs and Goldens make awesome family pets and they adore children. They can be hyper though and often don't outgrow their puppy antics until over two years old, moreso the lab than the golden.

Beagles are friendly and like kids but they can be loud and don't do well in an apartment for that reason. They are very food motivated and have a tendency to always follow their nose.

I don't know much about Bullies or Ridgebacks. Hope I helped.:)

well i own an american bulldog and she is EXCELLENT with my 15 month old daughter, she was VERY easy to train, but there is some shedding involved(mostly right after winter when she loses her winter coat),also they do well with an hour of walking, they just need attention(as does any dog).regardless of what people may say about the breed,i would totally blow it off if i were you because they make GREAT pets and i am VERY happy with my choice.good luck in finding the perfect pet for you.

German Shepherd!! I know you don't have that breed up there, but those dogs are one of the SMARTEST dogs I've seen. We just adopted one that was about to be euthanized and I could swear she can read my mind sometimes. Now the shedding, well she doesn't shed anymore than a Lab does as long as you brush her.

You have a very fine list of dogs. My favorites would have to be the Lab, because they are very friendly dog to kids and very affectionate, and they are a people dog, but protective too. And i also like the Golden Retrievers also, they are friendly, like the lab, they are very patent with kids. And they love the water too. Rottweilers and American Bulldogs are kind of iffy. Your would have to train those dogs really good. I'm not a big fan of those dogs.

I agree with WillisL, get an English Springer Spaniel. I have had 4 and my latest is 5mos. old. Most loyal & loving dog you will ever love to pieces!! Doesn't matter liver/white or black/white, they're the best. They are hyper as youngsters but are bred to flush so…..& then in typical springer fashion become just all around wonderful pals!!

I dont understand the list you came down to. The person who is considering a Lab or Golden shouldnt be considering a American Bulldog. Learn about the American Bulldog first. If you like the traits, temperment, and working ability of the AB breed you will automatically eliminate the rest of the options because none of them will compare.
