Whats the Difference Between a Roman Rottweiler and a German Rottweiler?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

im confused about this.
you didnt have to be so rude,i asked a perfectly normal question and you all start treating me like osama bin laden.
how was i supposed to know that they were bred by BYB’S.

A difference in terminology & proper breeding. My guess it’s the equivalent to "tea cup" in Chihuahuas, someone sticking their fingers where they shouldn’t & "creating" certain "types" of a breed.

German Rottweilers are Rottweilers that come from Germany. Not a "type" of the breed.

Don’t you love sale gimmicks? Ugh.

  1. Greek God AKA Greekman says:

There is NO Roman Rottie, the breed originated in Germany, there is NO German Rott either unless you import one from there. It is JUST a Rottie, period!!

OMG…This is what you are talking about….Again, there is no such thing and the dogs this person is talking about here are NOT Rotties, they are abominations that should be shot and NEVER allowed to breed!!!

The "roman rottweiler" is an attempt to breed for a look similar to Roman war dogs or some such nonsense. The AKC standard is the proper standard. Roman or German makes no difference, both are rottweilers, they are just bred for a slightly different look. It’s thought the ancestor of the Rottweiler was a roman mastiff of some sort but the breed itself originated in Germany and that standard is what should be used. Intentionally breeding for a look outside of the standard is questionable. No reputable breeder would breed outside of the breed standard and therefore you can’t be sure if the breeder who does is at least breeding carefully with vetting, shots, and testing included.

I suppose we will next have Teacup Rotties

I wonder if I started calling my Beagles "Double Dark Beagles" if they would be worth more. :-) )

It is my understanding, although yes there is no such thing, what people describe as a "roman rottweiler" are those grossly over standard, giant rottweilers. There is no such thing as a german rottweiler either unless it is from Germany. Bad breeders like to put any marker on the dog, even though it is wrong, as long a that maybe able to make them more money. The breed is just Rottweiler period

Edit- Good Gawd, what the heck is this?

Well first of all a German Rottweiler refers to a dog either in Germany or imported directly from Germany. Backyard breeders LOVE using the term German Rottweiler and pretending they have something special.

As for the "Roman" Rottweiler it seems to be the same kind of oversized impromper dog as the "Warlock" Dobermans. Just a con from backyard breeders to make their poorly bred creatures again seem special.

You have to love Greeks link and upon looking at the females noticed all of them appear to live on a chain. Nice

German Rotties are from Germany. Same standard. "Roman Rotties" are a BYB term to describe oversized Rotties. Dear God Greek, those dogs are atrocious!

Everyone covered German already. Roman is to Rottweiler as Teacup is to (insert toy breed here). Just a ploy to bring the suckers in.

Actually I completely disagree with most of your posts. In my opinion, the “roman” version is an attempt by a very well respected and trusted member of the rottie community to recreate the larger athletic version of the roman war dog we call rotties. Having owned several rotties in my life I can tell you I love this breed. I especially applaud the work of colosal rotties and the kennal there. The roman version is a little taller than the standard rottie and a bit hevier as well although the weight can vary by genetic line. Finally I just want to thank Emilly for her pioneering and brave work to stand in the face of the collective madness of society and popular opinion and create such beautiful animals. Anyone who disagrees just browse her gallery of roam K9s they are all beautiful…. Elway is my favorite he is handsome and looks like a roman war dog sculpture alive in the flesh. Thank you Emily.

the above link differentiating roman rottweiler !!

even i am confused with this three types highlighted in the networld

    1) german rottweiler
    2) roman rottweiler
    3) American rottwiler

seems every one interested to have their county name ahead of this wonderful breed :D

hope not end up screwing the breed characteristics more in this effort as already even the original german rottweiler breed been not exactly as the original german rottwiler physical characteristics. specially with hip and Elbow problems
