Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

Okay all my life i’ve had little animals toy poodles chiuawa yorkies birds lizards rabbits etc.. I really love the type of dogs above and alot of my family has had these types of dogs except me so i know how to handle them a bit but what do i need to know really if i want one of these type of dogs. I know they can be aggressive and im kind of nervous that one day they’ll turn on me is what is preventing me from getting one one day. What should i do to make sure they stay tamed and gentle?
haha nooo i think there beautiful .Like im good with dogs and taking care of them i just want to know if there stuff i should know about them that i dont already know
and yes i know but thats because of poor training and lack of being social mostly…
LoL bri when i was 8 i hung out with a 180 pound rottweiler… I know how to take care of a dog i just want to know tipss not a lecture…. im not stereotyping the dogss im asking questions because i’ve seen alot of cons of the dog. My father own a pitbull and a doberman before i was born. My cousins all had pitbulls too while my uncle owned the rottie … Now if you want to give tips id love to hear em.. not a lecture..
Thanks to those actually gave me good advice. Much appreciated
Bri stfuu lol…. you sound like your getting offended cause i said a simple term such as "i dont want it to turn on me" because i hear it all the time. Im asking people on yahoo answers just for some tips that my family or even i might not even know and possibly look upon that. Get off your period its not cute. Everyone else thanks for your information.

Well a dog won’t turn on your as long as you keep all it’s needs fulfilled. Like walking, keeping it social, Giving it a job to do every day, feeding and watering it.

And you have to make sure it is very tame around people and other dogs or you can have a problem. But what I would do is go to a good breeder that shows the breeds above and see what the dog’s needs are since you are not sure one how to keep them happy. This way they can help you with home work on the dog and find out which of the breeds is best for you. Some people don’t do the home work and think that just a dog will work and then find out they weren’t meant for this dog breed and take it to the shelter.

Please do a lot of home work. And to tell you the truth, smaller dogs are more likely to bite then a large dog because most people with small dogs don’t want to hurt the breed so they don’t do exercise, discipline and affection in that order. Now so you know each of these dogs will need at least 1 hour a walking every day because they are more of the hyper breeds. And they are all working breeds. Good luck to you :D I have a Rottweiler, chow chow and german shepherd mix. He is as hyper as a german shepherd but just as Intelligent as the rottweiler and german shepherd combined.

How Do I Find a Good Apartment in NYC That Accepts Rottweilers?

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

I am moving to NYC this summer and own a seven year old German Rottweiler. He is a wonderful well behaved dog and I KNOW he can handle apartment living (as well as I being able to handle having a dog living in an apartment). My only obstacle is finding decent places in lower manhattan that allows this breed. Any thoughts?

There are tons of dogs in Lower Manhattan. You have to find a Real Estate agent and make it perfectly clear, that you are looking for a pet friendly apartment that will accept your Rottweiller. You simply do not look or take any apartment that does not welcome your dog.

Will it be difficult? Yes. Is it impossible? No. Just don’t settle.

BTW, there are tons of rotties, pits and other large breed dogs living in Lower Manhattan.

Did the German Army Use Rottweilers,?

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

For military duty during WW2? I have heard they were used by the Roman army in B.C. and wondered how far back in history this breed was used and for what.

Yes.

During World War II (Roman numeral for "2"), both the Nazi forces and Allied forces used Rottweilers.

The breed is an ancient one, with beginnings in Germanic areas conquered by the Romans. They take their name from the town of Rottweil in the area of Wurttemberg in what is now Germany.

Actually, Rottweilers were more than just dogs used for military purposes. Initially, they were working dogs on farms, herding cattle and pulling carts with farm produce. They also guarded the farmstead and the farm animals, keeping them from harm from unscrupulous people and predatory animals. (Who or what is going to argue with a barking Rottie?) :-)

If you need more information on the breed and their uses throughout history, I suspect your local library (school library, public library or campus library, if you are a college/univ. student) will have some books on the subject. A reference librarian will be happy to help you find what you seek.

Rottweilers with good breeding lines and which are well-trained are great, gentle dogs and are also good watch dogs.

The best Rottie I ever knew was a female named "Thunder." I wish I had a photo of her sniffing at a baby bird that had fallen from it’s nest. I was worried she might just open her mouth and gobble the little bird in one bite, but all she did was sniff at it and continue her gentle walk. She was also addicted to small bites of "kitty food" (canned cat food.)

The dogs are strong and only ferocious when humans mistreat them and train them to be that way.

Best wishes

I Am Fond of German Shepherds and Rottweilers However..(people Experienced in GSDS or Rotties Please Respond)?

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

I’m not sure I can handle the very demanding training they require.
Exercise? Sure. I am a hiker, outdoorsy person, love to run dogs, they would not be missing out an exercise requirements! I grew up with a pitbull and she was very well trained/exercised because of me and my efforts, but thats another story..
Anyways, I LOVE the look of german shepherds, but have heard they are prone to aggression if not handled correctly, and I am not a "dog expert" by any means, and could not afford to have someone else train them. Obviously I could train basic commands, and I am an experienced dog owner, but I’m fearful the german shepherd may be too much? For those of you that owned GSD’s I am wondering just how much of my ideas are true.. are they excessively demanding? Are the prone to agression? Any stories you have to share about that? I do have young children around my house(relatives kids) and a baby will be coming in a few years and I obviously plan to keep my dog whichever I buy for the full length of his or her life. Would you still recommend this breed? Everything I said also applies to rottweilers..Another breed ive always wanted but am scared of aggression/stories/media/ difficulty to train. I’m just trying to be a responsible dog owner here, and yes I have looked up information on both breeds, but I haven’t met any in real life that I’ve spent significant amount of time with. Besides a rott my grandparents owned named Kaiser that WAS aggressive. (they were idiots though).
I guess my main questions are: Are my theories right? Should I chose another dog, or take a chance at buying one?
If I do go through and bring one into my life, what do I need to do?
What is the difference in temperament and handling in Rotts and GSDS? Is there a difference in their genders? im leaning towards a female GSD or a male rott?
Can you please recommend other breeds that look like a german shepherd but with a more mild mannered temperament that isn’t known for aggression? I just love the look of german shepherds.
Any other recommendations are appreciated.

Thank you so much

As gsd owner for over 45 years I can recommend getting a gsd as a companion.
They are not aggressive if socialised well from puppyhood and they are loyal and intelligent dogs.
Yes, they do need to be trained and you must be very firm but fair with them and they will respond with devotion to you if you are their leader and mentor.
A gsd would make a wonderful hiking companion and once they are over 1 year old would be mature enough to hike with you all day.
Gsd`s vary in temperament just like any other dog. Some are born to be dominant and some as followers. The working line gsd`s usually need more mental stimulation than the ones bred for the pet market and I would go for a middle of the road sort of gsd which is the best all rounder unless you are into dog sports. Thats just my opinion though.
Can`t advuise on the Rottie as i have never owned one and they are not one of my favourite breeds. Probably because I have been bitten by two for no reason..lol. But I am sure there ARE some nice ones about.!!!
I have male gsd`s and I find them wonderful dogs. I have also owned 3 females in the past who were great dogs too. Good Luck with your choice.

What Is Schutzhund Training, and How Does It Work?

Friday, September 17th, 2010

I hear so much about it when talking about rottweilers, German Shepherd Dogs, etc. I know it’s protection training (or at least I think I know that…?), but what is the dog actually trained, and how is a dog bred for it?
Don’t Litter, I’ve tried to do my own research… Google isn’t a helpful site, you really have to dig to find what you’re looking for, and if you don’t know what that is, how are you going to find it?

It started out close to 100 year a go as a suitability test for breeding/working purposes for the GSD.
It stayed that way for many years, took a dive for the worse in the 60′s, and then became the most widely available dog sport in Europe and maybe the world.

The dogs are trained in what is now a game, in OB, tracking and protection. The sport has a good following, although it has declined in the last 10 years due to the popularity of the ring sports that started becoming more available in the States. Hope I helped!

How Come German Dogs Are Considered More Powerful in England Than English Dogs?

Alsatians, Shepherds, Rottweilers, Boxers

German stuff always seemed better than any other country’s

Why Are Most Police Dogs or Bomb-Sniffing Dogs German Shepards?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Why aren’t Dobermans or Pit Bulls or Rottweilers recruited more by the police and military? Are they just junk-yard dogs?

Actually, more police/military dogs are Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds these days… dogs are chosen from working lines with good health tests that can perform their job well. Most people think "police dog" when they see a GSD or a Belgian or a Dutch so folks will leave them alone and/or not panic when they see them.

Dobes are a working breed but are very, very tall with long legs – hard to fit into a patrol car! Rotts are just too big and the "bully" breeds were never, historically, bred to be as responsive to their handler’s instructions while the herding dogs needed to obey instantly. All of these breeds have and do serve as police/military dogs but there are few breeders consistently producing dogs from these breeds FOR police/military jobs.

The "problem" is self-feeding: police departments don’t look for those breeds because they haven’t found what they were looking for in the past, breeders don’t breed for the working instincts needed for police jobs because police don’t search out and buy these breeds and the drive needed for a working dog is 10x what most pet homes can handle.

The military uses and has used all of these breeds for years (a bully-type dog was promoted in Sargeant in one of the World Wars and most of the marine’s elite canine force were Dobes) but they just don’t make them like they used to (and they just won’t fit into a patrol car like they did into an amphibious vehicle).

What’s the Difference Between an Americn Rottweiler and a German Rottweiler?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I have a purebred Rottweiler, but I’m not sure if she is a German blooded or American blooded Rottweiler. Are all Rottweilers German blooded? She has black and rust colored fur with massive paws and a sweet Rottweiler face.

A Rottweiler is a Rottweiler. Was your dog born in Germany? The Rott origins go back to Germany, but that was centuries ago.

Are Rottweilers Really Considered a Threat to Their Owners and Are German Shepherds Better Guards..?

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

.. dogs are usually very loyal to their owners, but i heard some people say that rottweilers follow the person that feeds them and can turn against their own owners, is that true? cuz i have a friend who wants to get one to guard his farm and he’s very good with dogs and animals in general, breeding them, training them ..etc but i wanna make sure that he’s gonna be okay and that his dog won’t turn on him all of a sudden.. Also, some people have been telling me that German Shepherds are better than rottweilers as guards, is that true?

thanks

rottweilers and shepherds r good companions. the bad side of them is that the rot. is very protective of its food and not house hold i have living and walking proof 36 stitches and 78 staples later at 4 yrs old. my BROTHER, shepherds are mostly alpha males or betas. think they own the house hold if you tell or treat them other wise they will give u a big f u and pee on the furniture. id get a pitbull, alphas and betas are not as common in the breeds. they are very content with children and adults and if trained as a puppy in a household the pitbull has natural responses to protect the household and family inside the home and they are very playful companions.

Do German Shepherds Basically Have the Same Personality as Rottweilers?

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

well, they are both guard dogs, which means they’re protective and loyal to their masters. but people usually view german shepherds as heroic, caring dogs who will do anything for you and they view rotties as vicious attack dogs…. but i know that’s stereotyping, so i’m not gonna say i believe the common public unless i meet a rott or shepherd for myself. from people i know who own german shepherds say the same things as the guy i know has a rottweiler. are the breeds quite similar? if not can you explain the differences?

i’m interested in owning either breed someday….

Golden I find the opposite is true. I find Rottweilers mature mentally much quicker than GSDs. I’ve had Rottweilers capable of serious work at 12 and 14 months of age, where as a GSD in most cases wouldn’t even have began defensive work.

These two breeds are both intelligent. And properly bred ones make good protection dogs. But they are completely different. The drives they work out of, the reasons they work, how they work, everything is different. They’re so different the list of ways they are different is shorter than the list of ways they’re the same. Rottweilers on average are hard dogs, very confident, controlling dogs who require SOLID handlers. GSD’s are usually more forgiving of fools, but not all. Your best bet is to research on your own, and get out and meet a few dogs.
