well, they are both guard dogs, which means they’re protective and loyal to their masters. but people usually view german shepherds as heroic, caring dogs who will do anything for you and they view rotties as vicious attack dogs…. but i know that’s stereotyping, so i’m not gonna say i believe the common public unless i meet a rott or shepherd for myself. from people i know who own german shepherds say the same things as the guy i know has a rottweiler. are the breeds quite similar? if not can you explain the differences?
i’m interested in owning either breed someday….
Golden I find the opposite is true. I find Rottweilers mature mentally much quicker than GSDs. I’ve had Rottweilers capable of serious work at 12 and 14 months of age, where as a GSD in most cases wouldn’t even have began defensive work.
These two breeds are both intelligent. And properly bred ones make good protection dogs. But they are completely different. The drives they work out of, the reasons they work, how they work, everything is different. They’re so different the list of ways they are different is shorter than the list of ways they’re the same. Rottweilers on average are hard dogs, very confident, controlling dogs who require SOLID handlers. GSD’s are usually more forgiving of fools, but not all. Your best bet is to research on your own, and get out and meet a few dogs.

There actually very different
German Shepherd are extremely energetic guarding/hearding dog
Rottweiler are guarding breed and are quite moderately active in personality

Had several of both…even both at the same time. Both very smart…quick learners, very naturally protective, good with kids. The difference I found was one (rotts) were a bit more bullish and GS’s were agile. Rotts matured slower and were quieter pups but the GSD was always focused where the rottie wanted to learn but move on to something new. None of my dogs were vicious, they all loved kids and people the second they knew I liked them but they would guard the house of vehicle if left in them alone. There are similarities but definite differences…

Though each dog would have its own unique personality, the two breeds are quite different, Rottweilers are usually reserved while german shepherds are very attentive. Rotties have had a lot of bad press as attack dogs as some irresponsible owner raise them to be mean and combined with their great strength they can do a lot of damage. However any dogs thats raised to be mean would be dangerous. Rottie are lovely dogs that form a special bond with the family and especially one member of the family .
