I’m thinking about getting a Rottie, but want a dog that I can take on 3-7 mile runs. I know there are a lot of better dogs for this, but I also know that a lot of them, like Dobermans, Weimeraners, and German Shephers have similar bloodlines that can be traced back to Germany.
Most importantly, I want to know if THIS breed is okay to take on 3-7 mile runs. Thank you very much.
Yes you can take rotties on runs however you should buy a rottie that has already had their hips and heart checked for anykind of defects. Rotties are known for getting hipdysplasia. So buy the rottie from a reputable breeder. Ask them if their parents had any hip problems.

i own two rotties myself.
i have a rottweiler and a blue heeler, any big hill i walk my rottweiler up she is behind me slowing down, my blue heeler always by my side and ready to run further.
my rottweiler also stops at almost every tree and is stubborn.
nothing fazes my blue heeler when we are exercising.
my rottweiler is a great dog but a blue heeler would be great for a runner like you.
and they are very very loyal.

A dog that size can be fine on long runs, once his health checks out…
But you need to work them up to it. Just like a person, they can’t go from no running/couch potato to a 10 mile jog over night. You’ll need to start out on short jogs and gradually increase. It wont take too long for it to get into shape, dogs are amazing at the rate their bodies can change.

You also have to remember that a rottie is a large to giant breed and you HAVE to make sure you wait till its about 18 months MINIMUM to 2yrs before taking on any forced exercise e.g. running on a lead by your side. Irrepairble injury can occur if its made to run before this age

Hi,
Moderately active Rottweilers will appreciate a couple of 10- to 20-minute walks each day. They also enjoy playing with balls and going hiking. More energetic Rotties may need longer exercise times and more structured activities. They are easy to train if treated with respect and make great companions. Here’s more info:

We adopted our Rottie she was skinny and dirty – Energy is something they gain from being healthy. At first she was pretty low energy – and she had no endurance.
I bike with her and reccomend buying a $20 bike computer that tells you speed/distance. She went from “running” 2 km @ 12 km/hr to running 5-10kms @ 20km/hr easily. This transition happened over about 2 months. If I don’t feel like pedaling she can probably pull me about 20km/hr for about 2kms! After a little warm up she also likes booting it at about 30km/hr for the first kilometer. So unless you are a marathon runner I’d say a rottie would make a pretty good jogging buddy!
She’s also actually gained weight since we adopted her. When she got no exercise she was 75 lbs and now she’s about 85 lbs. The weight she gained is solid muscle. Her energy level is also waaay up she bounces off the walls now if I don’t run her at least 2-3 times a week. Rotties are seriosly the best dog in the world!
