Just like we see on the news on tv or tv show cops that it seems like they always show German Shepard dog K-9s more then any other dog and i was just curious with this interesting question about rottweilers as a K-9 and how are they compare to German Shepard's.And for anyone else who is going to be a police officer what is your opinion?
We don't use Rottweilers because as a short hair breed, they don't have the undercoat necessary to make them effective for long periods of time in cold weather. We've tested one in the past, and it was total junk; it looked mean, but it was trash. Also because in our opinion, they are a little too big and not as agile as the Malinois, GSD's, and Dutch Shepherds we have; also because the vendors we deal with don't sell them. It has nothing to do with bite pressure as one said. We had a GSD a while back that had a tremendous bite, he broke several arms and legs in his career.

Shepards are highly intelligent and more stable.

Dont forget, pit bulls and pit bull mixes are also growing in popularity, along with labs and other breeds. The reason for this is because different dogs have different abilities. Also, times have changed. Its no longer necessary to get a pedigreed dog. Thats why the pits are gaining momentum. Those dogs are being rescued from the shelter and then being used for police work. Some have a tenacity, some have a better sense of smell, some are just tradition.

Rottweilers are not used because their bite is too strong.
If they bite someone they can easily cause more injury than necessary to apprehend the perpetrator. It has to do with use of force rule. Only use as much force as necessary.
I am sure Rottweilers could do everything the Shepherds do.

Law enforcement 18 years, K9 handler
In his country of origin (Germany) the Rottweiler is highly accepted and recognized as a Police dog (officially recognized as a Police and Military Dog since 1920)
Rottweiler are well known Police dogs because he is:
- Extremely loyal and reliable
- a strong Dog
- well known for his strong performance
- equipped with a very strong protective instinct
And not to forget his appearance!
Nonetheless, this dog is only recommended for experienced dog handler and should be acquired only from a serious breeder, who understands the breed and is breeding for the above mentioned criteria’s.
In Austria, the Rottweiler is also recognized as a extremely good Military Dog.

German Shepherds are the number 1 Police dogs because German Shepherds are not only very smart (like the Rottweiler too), but they are very obedient and docile.
Unfortunately, their are always also some kind of “Shady” folks attracted by the Rottweiler because of the race appearance and their strong protective instinct and these people are responsible for the dis-reputability of this wonderful breed.
But the Rottweiler is a great working dog if he is in the right hands.

german shepards are more sharp aka aggressive than rottweilers, period. Ihop you are a dog handle, lol. Get real, a well bred rottweiler is superior in temperment to a german shepard. I think you are a fraud, anyone with a real history in dog training would use the word SHARP instead of agressive , YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON. Rottweilers make better search dogs for drugs on persons, cause german shepards attack like retards, and are very aggressive. My rottweilers would not bark at kids, most german shepards do bark at kids, cause they are stupid dogs! Rottweilers that are bred right in Germany cost more than german shepards for a reason, cause they are better dogs.using German shepards is tradition among redneck cops, ignorant ones like you obviously dont know shit, YOU BASE YOURE EXPERIENCE ON ONE rottweiler and then call the whole breed trash,HOW STUPID OF A REDECK COP CAN YOU GET!?
MOONED<wrong ROttweilers are very very intellegent and less aggressive than german shepards, obviously you are not very brignt, cause the rottweiler is second to no breed of dog, in VERSATILITY<period, the rott has been used to do anything u can think of, and can kick a german shepards ass to boot:)
