Do Rottweilers Make Good Running Partners?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010
Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I’m thinking about getting a Rottie, but want a dog that I can take on 3-7 mile runs. I know there are a lot of better dogs for this, but I also know that a lot of them, like Dobermans, Weimeraners, and German Shephers have similar bloodlines that can be traced back to Germany.

Most importantly, I want to know if THIS breed is okay to take on 3-7 mile runs. Thank you very much.

Yes you can take rotties on runs however you should buy a rottie that has already had their hips and heart checked for anykind of defects. Rotties are known for getting hipdysplasia. So buy the rottie from a reputable breeder. Ask them if their parents had any hip problems.

Why Don’t They Use Rottweilers as Police Dogs Anymore?

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

I see Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds only. No more Rottweilers anymore.
Anyone know why?
Every police Belgian and German shepherd I have met have been really spazzy

Contrary to the person who said they are too fierce, the problem is they are not.
Poor breeding practices have almost destroyed this breed. They are nowhere near the working breed they used to be.
I have read that there are some imports that are what the breed used to be.

Sadly, the German Shepherd Dog is heading down the same road. There are far to many that are (to borrow a phrase) a shadow of their former selves.

Mals and GSDs are also more versitile, for tracking, detection, and protection.

ADD-
Interesting thoughts on the size Moof, and absolutely correct. Part of the obstacle course handlers need to pass here included dragging and lifting deadweight over a fence to simulate the dog.

Funny, the K9 trainer for our section used to breed Rotties.

Rottweilers or German Shepherd Dogs?

Friday, December 4th, 2009

I’m considering adopting either one of these types of dogs from a rescue specificall for these breeds. Which breed do you think is better? Pros and cons of both? Any info would be much appreciated.

I have a rottie that I adopted from a rescue after she got bigger than expected and someone else tried to make her mean. We got her in 2003 and she is the best friend I ever had. She is gorgeous, kind and gentle and has been the neighbor son’s play buddy from age 4. She is smart, nice to the cat, and well over 100lbs.
Rottie’s have an undercoat that means they shed a lot all year round, but their coats are short, so grooming is easy. I have also never had to lock the doors to my house, or worry about my daughter when I am not home. I think adopting Ranger was the best thing I’ve ever done and I would highly recommend Rotties for the right person.

German Sheperds are also beautiful, smart, loyal and all that. Their hair is longer so grooming is different, but any shepherd owner will tell you that you should get one of these.

All large dogs have potential for things like hip dysplasia, and they scare some people, and they don’t live as long as little dogs. There are no bad dogs, just wrong families. If you have the ability to provide either dog with a good balanced home (watch the Dog Whisperer!) you can’t possibly go wrong with either. Best of luck!

Are There Laws Against Owning Rottweilers in Salina Ks?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

if so wat are they and all the information on the breed thanks also would dobermans or rottweilers or german shepherds do better at an apartment

the only ban I can find for Salina is for pit bulls. Myself I would not want a large breed dog in an apartment but that is me. If I were to choose I would go with the doberman.

Are There Different Varieties Within the Rottweiler Breed?

Monday, September 14th, 2009

What are the different varieties of rottweilers? Example German rottweilers\ American rottweilers……Which ones grow taller?

The only difference is whether a line is bred to meet akc standard http://www.akc.org/breeds/rottweiler/index.cfm or FCI standard http://www.usrconline.org/breedstand.html

For a male
AKC max standard height is 27 inches
FCI max standard is 68 centimeters = 26.7716535 inches
There is no big difference between them in height but whether the dog in question is closer to the min or max height or under/over standard depends on the line. In germany they only breed dogs that fall within breed standard, here they can and often do breed anything with papers.

German lines are often considered ‘sharp’ or ‘hard’ compared to many american lines, in germany they have to earn the right to breed with fitting within the confirmation standard and with working ability/temperament testing/endurance testing (required titles) and breed reviews/ratings. They are generally more muscular than american lines and have more drive making them not the best pet for an person without experience with such a large dog. American lines look more refined and smoother bodied, sleeker.

Coat can vary in how far away from standard it is allowed to be, a wavy coat or overly long coat is a fault. If a dog of either line is very nice they can still win dispite having faults, few dogs are perfect. Generally most responsible breeders adhere to trying to produce pups that are as close to standard as possible. Form follows function, too much variancy from the standard can affect working ability or health ie oversize is more risk of hip problems.

German Taining for German Rottweilers?

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Not sure what your question is since I’m not familiar with the practice of "taining." Or if you are asking about teaching your dog a language or what. Maybe try restating your question using proper grammar and/or spelling. Good Luck.

What Other Dog Breeds Can Be Trained to Attack Apart From Rottweilers and German Shepard’s?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

and how old do you start training them to attack

You can train any breed of dog to attack, it’s just that most people don’t bother training Chihuahuas or Pomeranians. There wouldn’t be much point unless you’re planning to attack people with weak ankles.

P.S. – It is SHEPHERD, not SHEPARD. And you don’t need an apostrophe.

We Are Looking to Breed Quality German Rottweilers?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Does anyone know anything about getting a female (at what age, would we breed her) and the cost in breeding high quality rotties.

If you have to come on Y!A to ask any breeding questions – you haven’t done nearly enough research to even know the basics.

Get offline – get a mentor or two – go to shows – go to trials – meet some breeders – learn the ropes.
THEN you can think about breeding dogs.

Could Someone Tell Me if the German Rottweilers Have a Square Head?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

No, they do not…that is a term often used by the unwashed to describe the fact that a well bred European Rott will have a bigger, more "blocky" looking head then an American dog will!
