I've been doing a LOT of research, prepping to get my dream dog: a Rottweiler. I've already read all the questions/answers that I can find here on Yahoo! Answers, and I've noticed that they're all laced with Rottie owners going on and on about the responsibilities of owning a Rottweiler and pushes to find a rescue center and whatnot. I know about all of that, and those kinds of answers aren't going to get you any love around here.
What I want to know is this: The breeder that I had settled on wants $3000 for a Rottweiler puppy ($500 deposit and $2500 at time of sale). I had previously found breeders that went as high as $2500, but most seem to cap out at $1800. The $3000 is/would be a show-quality pup with world champions on both the Sir and Dam's sides.
Is this a fair price for what is essentially a "cream-of-the-crop" pure bred ADRK registered Rottweiler, or is this guy full of it? I've never paid for a Rottie before and I want to be sure I'm not getting hosed.
Yes, the breeder that I've been speaking with is highly recommended, and breeds German Rottweilers registered with the ADRK using the FCI Breed Standard. Supposedly, this guy is one of the best breeders in the world, and is highly regarded as at least the best breeder in the US. I was relatively sure that's why the price was $3000, but wanted a second (and third, and fourth, and fifth, etc) opinion about the price tag. Seems worth asking since he's charging $500 more then the most pricey competitors.
That seems too much over priced….doesnt matter the champions on both sides, breeding is more than just mating 2champions, mating 2champions would not ensure a champion litter. Its match making in reality, u see the negative or weak points in ur bit*h n try to find a stud that has those things in him n can overcome those in the litter, good breeding is focused on breeding champions rather than merely mating 2 champions. Mating 2 non champion dogs, but suited good will have more probability of producing show pups than 2 mismatched champions, result disastrous litter. Even the most seasoned breeder would never guarantee a pup as future champion, all he'll commit is the pup "looks promising", as pups change a lot as they grow into adult hood, the best in the litter at 2 months may not turn out to be the best at 6months, n the not so good might start looking as the future show prospect pup. So back to the subject, the price u quoted seems too much for even a very promising pup with very sound strong lines…. unless he's full German n shutzhund trained etc….rest is up to u, i'll suggest research more n try to hook up with more breeders in ur area n visit dog shows to be more exposed to reality, u'll find many good breeders offering sound lines n healthy pups anywhere between 1000$ to 1500$

Can I just say that your bit about "aren't going to get you any love around here" might be the case, but people will still try because of the amount in rescue. I am with a rottie rescue in the UK and have today walked the 6 we have in kennels after an hour's drive to get there, another hour back, and then walk my own three, plus the foster boy.
All rotties.
You can't blame people for trying.
However – back to your question. If I was buying a rottie puppy which I will again at some point, then I would go to a reputable site, which would be champdogs over here, and look at the different prices and how well they are doing in the ring. I would also be paying my money for the back up forever, and also knowing the breeder would take back if ever needed. I wouldn't pay out a lot without those two things in place.
Then in the UK we would expect to pay between £500 to £800 for the top quality show rotties. $3000 does sound way over what we pay here. However some of the Sch trained dogs with German parentage seem to be fetching more, however those dogs are very high drive and hard work. A lot of show people do breed dogs with a bit of spirit in order to be "on their toes" in the ring, and so do try and choose the type of temperament you want as well. Not that I mean mean or aggressive just hard work if you just want a dog around the house.
I have a high drive girl here and the work on her is constant and she shows no sign of slowing down at 5 yrs old.
I do know someone in the states who breeds, shows and judges and if you wish to approach her to ask any more questions then I'm sure she would help.

Rotties are amazing; I've grown up with them and owned several.
You must understand that there's a fad going on in America for "German" Rottweilers… that's not only referring to the type (blockier heads, deeper chests, etc. etc.), but also yes – they do come from Germany. So most of the top breeders you're going to find are going to be breeding from and using IMPORTS. That's why the pups started getting so expensive several years ago, when big breeders started importing.
Now, just about any backyard breeder can look and see that "hey, these people are selling their Rotties for upwards of $2,500, so that must be what the breed goes for in general." So you have some really poorly bred Rotts out there with these hugs price tags that started (and rightly so, if you ask me) from the German imports. (Those imported dogs and bloodlines are GREAT and often the best you can get).
If you can afford to go for a pup with imported bloodlines, I suggest doing it.
Otherwise, if the breeder you're looking at is breeding just run of the mill Rotties and still asking for those import prices, skip it.

I hope you will reconsider your feelings about rescue. I found my rotti there and he is absolutely gorgeous and well mannered. As a matter of fact, my vet told me he is a beautiful specemin of the breed. With the economy as bad as it is and people losing everything, especially their beloved pets, don't you think you can find some "love" and adopt a homeless rotti. Who knows what you will find there — perhaps your "dream dog".
As for your dream of owning a "cream of the crop" rotti, my guess is there is no such thing — especially if your looking for a German line. I was told that Germany doesn't release there "cream of the crop" to be bred in the US. There is a Rotti breeder who lives not too far from me and he imports from Germany and breeds and sells his pups for lots of $$. I brought my rescued rotti to him for some advice and he actually thought it was one of his. LOL (Lots of luck!)
