Rottweiler vs. Pitbull?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

My family and I are planning on getting a dog. My husband says either a rottweiler or pitbull full breed. But I’m not sure which one would be best. I would like to get the dog from around 8 weeks old. I’m leaning towards the rottweiler because of the stories I’ve heard about pitbulls, but I mostly see the pitbull puppies for sale. I can’t seem to find any rottweiler puppies for sale. So I might have to lean towards a pitbull now or depending on some responses I will keep searching to find a rottweiler puppy. My husband has had both dogs before so he has all the experience in raising them. I would like the dog to be a guard dog and there are children in the house. I just need to know your opinions about each dog, how they are with children, and if you’ve had any experience raising each to further make my decision. Thanks.
Thank you all for your wonderful advice almost all of you gave a best answer. I did do my research on each but I’ve read good and bad about both dogs. I needed to hear more about these dogs from people who have had personal experience and their opinions on each. I haven’t came up with a clear decision, but one thing I know is that I will definitely get the dog as a puppy, raise it right, and take in all the advice you all have given me. I now know that the way I raise the dog is the way it will be, and also what the dog is bred to do. I don’t need a vicious dog just one that will protect us, be friendly to family, friends and the children. More people seem to either like the Rottweiler or both dogs. So I’m thinking about the Rottweiler, they’re just so hard to find for sale as puppies (especially full breeds). Thank you all so much.

ok first off a GUARD DOG is not a PET! and should not be around children. Its when people expect a guard dog to be the same as a pet you get stories all over the news when the dog kills one of the kids. sorry but its ture just read the news all the dogs are either used as guard dogs or are kept like they are guard dogs (live outside dont often get quality attention), one mother even said ‘it was more like a pet than a guard dog’. when the dog was soley kept as a guard dog.

Pitbulls are not recomended as good guard dogs due to there love of people. (fighting breeds were bred to be dog agressive but extreamly peoply friendly as there handlers are in the ring with them during fights.)

Both breeds are verry good with people and children provided they are brought up propely and not adused, mistreated or trained to be agressive. Both are stong willed and powerfull breeds that need propper handling and socialisation and both form stong bonds with there owners.

If you prefur rotties go with that.

good luck

You need to do research on both breeds, not from the news actual research. Pit Bulls can be great dogs if trained and socialized as well as Rottweilers. Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any other breed of dog. Pit Bulls make horrible guard dogs, they were bred not to have any human aggression..Rottweilers were bred for protection they make excellent guard dogs.

well pitbulls are definitely experienced owners only and you have to look at their parents and their behaviors/medical problems but you have to do that with any puppy you consider buying

i own 3 APBT now, 2 JY dogs (mostly rotty and mastiff) and have had rottweilers in the past.

pit bull terriers OR rottweilers, trained and socialized properly both make great pets. the key is that the pups have to meet lots of people, and never encourage the pup to bite or growl, and don’t let people scare the pup.

don’t ask or expect the dog to be a "guard" dog.
that’s where people go wrong with BOTH breeds- that’s why you’ve heard bad stories about the dogs- people try to make them into guard dogs…. they’re not.

Both of those dogs are great if raised well and properly trained.

My boyfriend has had rottweilers all his life and they are huge lap dogs. Very sweet and loving.

I have also heard that Pits are terrific with kids and very family oriented, (if raised well).

The only concern about both of these breeds is getting an adult one and not knowing its previous history. Some dogs that have been abused in the past, will have issues that are hard to deal with and might not be safe around kids.

Rotties will be a lot bigger than Pits (weight).

You should get a Rottweiler. They are excellent guard dogs, loyal, and they are good around kids. I would be afraid to have a pit bull in a home with children. Pit bulls are bred for fighting, and tho they may seem sweet, they turn on you. I have a friend who has a pit bull who was sweet as could be, and one day the pit bull turned on her 5 year old daughter, brought her to the ground, and started biting on her head and face, She left the E.R. with over 200 stiches in her head. Rottweiler’s are just as good a guard dog, and all the more safer.

I agree with the first poster, Pitbulls are very sweet dogs, but horrible guard dogs. I know, I’ve gotten my dad to sneak into the house and act like he was robbing the place once (the dog had never seen him yet) and all he did was run up to him and lick him. They’re great with kids though, in fact I don’t think they could be happier when with kids.

Well Rotties and Pits both make great pets. They are both very active dogs so just make sure to train whichever one you get and give him or her lots and lots of exercise. Now with that said, I own an APBT and she is a great dog, very strong and very active but great. I have my pit very well trained and I take her out with me everywhere. Many BYB breed pits so since that is all you can find make sure the breeders have the parents on premises and get papers on the puppy. Me personally I never saw my pits parents nor do I have papers but she is still great. Don’t be fooled by the horror stories you hear about pit bulls, they really are great animals. Plus they are very easy to train, you just have to be consistent. Good luck hun!

PITT BULLS ARE NOT MEAN DOGS!!!!
I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT!
They are actually one of the sweetest dogs ever!
they are trained to be mean! They dont just decide too kill and fight a dog, if they dont kill and fight the dog, the owner will kill it basically, or beat it with a huge pice of ply wood! (Ive done my research, i work at an animal shelter!)

We get Pitt Bulls at the Shelter all the time, and the ones that have been abused, neglected and a victim of dog fighting, are the sweetest!

Please dont let stupid stories not let you get one f these sweet dogs!
We need people to get them and raise them the right way, so they can live a happy and loving life, and maybe the government wont "exterminate them"."
Its because of stupid people in gangs! who think they are big, bad and tough that get these dogs and abuse them, and trasin them to KILL!

Any dog can be trained to kill!

I have a pure breed red-nose pit-bull. He is the most lovable, harmless, mans best-friend anyone could ask for. I also have a little poodle-daschund mixed mutt and they are inseparable. When I first moved in with my boyfriend (he owns the pitt) I was skeptic thinking that my little pup would get attacked or used as a chew toy for such a massive creature but within 2 weeks the pit-bull has since showed nothing but love for my little dog and all of us. He has NEVER shown any aggression or hostility to us. Its all about how you raise the dog and treat it. Pit-bulls are not meant to fight neither is any dog. Just give it lots of love, affection and attention that’s all my dogs ever ask for.
    Give the Pitt a try!

P.S. Not too mention that pitts are known to take well care of there families especially children. They are GREAT with kids!! Google to find out more and GOOD LUCK!!

these are two very good dogs and the stories are true but pit bulls are some of the most loving dogs you can get both are EXTREMELY protective of there owners and a very powerful animals pit bulls are generally smaller and sound nasty mean but will love you forever all the same with rottweilers are a little more protective but they are more gentle before you get ether make sure that you have permits for those dogs and that it is legal in your city or they will take it away

Both are wonderful family pets. My husband grew up on pit bulls and never had any problems with them. I myself grew up with rotts and raised bred and sold them for a while. Either breed though has horror stories of them turning on their owners. however, if your getting them as puppy you will be in control of their actions. train them right as they can be very protective of their family’s. when i was a kid my parents couldnt even spank me in front of one of our rotts or she would bite them (she was born a year before i was and as far as she was concerned i was her puppy) my parents trained her to listen to me, because we lived in the country with cougars and coyotes if i said "help sadie help" she would come running to me. even saved my life a few times. im more partial to rotts as well just because of my history with them but my husband loves pitts. personally, i would be happy with either one. just do your job as an owner and train them right. congrats on getting the puppy! :D

I have owned both and I prefer the Rottweilers they are easier to train and not as stubborn. Both breeds are dominant breeds and need strong owners. The Rottweilers make excellent all around dogs, they are a great guardian and they are very smart. I have trained several dogs of both breeds and Rottweilers are easier to train. Also so may of the Pit Bulls have fighting bred into them, regardless of anything that is what so many are bred to do. Pit Bulls also have a high prey drive, it has been bred into them. Many Rottweiler breeders breed for good sound all around dogs which is less common with the Pit Bull.
My family bred and raised German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans for generations. And I have owned, or fostered over different 40 breeds and everyone of those different breeds all held true to what they were bred to do. Sadly so many pit bulls are bred to fight. A close friend of mine who is a licensed and professional dog trainer and behavior specialist had one of her raised, well trained and perfectly handled pit bulls attack a family member for no real reason. It was child and the dog has spent his whole life of 8 years around kids. I do think that a great deal of how a dog is raised and more importantly handled every day of its life plays a huge role but so does genetics.
From experience and I would chose the Rottweiler.

If you want a dog that has guarding instincts, I’d go with a Rottweiler. Pit Bulls of any type were not originally bred to be guard dogs, while Rotties where bred to be an all purpose farm dog, and their duties included guarding. They are also excellent with kids if raised properly. If you already have kids in your house, great, your Rottie can grow up with them and will likely get along great with them if you teach your kids to be respectful.

I wouldn’t try to train your Rottie to be a guard dog, they have enough strength, fierce looks, and guard instincts as it is. Socialize the heck out of that dog so it is friendly around your children, other dogs, other people, etc and doesn’t think that anyone that comes in your house is an intruder. Rather, teach him to accept friendly people that you know that come to your house.

Also, getting him from a responsible breeder that shows, performs genetic health testing on breeding stock, raises puppies in the home, requires your dog to be spayed or neutered, and offers a guarantee is the best way to go. These breeders are the most responsible and will be most knowledgeable about the breed and its temperament. Start at http://www.amrottclub.org/ to learn more about the breed and find links to some responsible breeders. Ask lots of questions and meet the parents before buying a puppy, socialize well, and you should have a family companion for a long time.
