Rottweiler Puppies Eating Too Fast?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

i havea 5 and 6 month old rottweiler puppies, the male came here with the speedy eating and now the female is following. i have to gate them from the 10 year olds food, she does not like them i also need to get them together, if i can cure the gorging issue. i am afraid of bloat, puppies play all the time, esp. after eating because they feel great afterwards.

As others have said, do not let them play after meal time, that greatly increases the risk of bloat. For the eating too fast, I would suggest a brake-fast bowl, we had the same issue with our Rottie and it definitely made a difference for the better.

Good luck!

Have you tried stuffing Kongs with their food? That way they need to work to get the food out.

Pet stores also carry these balls that your dog can roll around until pieces of food fall out. My neighbor does it for her dog with her regular morning meal and it usually takes her about 20 minutes to get all the food out.

You have to stop the playing right after eating! Dogs can’t eat for at least 1 hour before or after strenuous activity. If you can’t stop them playing, crate them.

And to slow down the eating, you can buy bowls specially designed for that in any pet store.

Try not to allow them to play that close after eating. Their belly’s need to settle.

For the gorging issue there are many options out there. You can try getting something called a treat cube. Its basically a ball that you stuff their food into and to eat it they have to roll it around. It takes longer to consume their food this way. There are also bowls designed for dogs who gorge. Or you can also get a tennis ball or rubber ball and place that in their food dish so they have to move it to be able to get at the food. But be careful with the ball. You don’t want them to think it is play time.

A puppy eats a lot of food. From birth up to six months of age, he’ll need to eat two to four times as much as an adult dog to support all that growth. A good rule of thumb (paw?) is that after his first week of life, when his weight doubles from what it was at birth, a puppy should gain one to two grams per pound of anticipated adult weight each day. This means that if your German Shepherd puppy (example) weighs 75 pounds as an adult, he should gain three to five ounces per day as a puppy
