Should I Get Two Rottweiler Puppies?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I have never owned a dog, but have always wanted to.. I was originally going to get one, but Ive been thinking, and i think i would really like to get 2 puppies and have them grow up together..

I am responsible and have the space and time for 2 dogs, so they will get plenty of attention. I am just wondering if it will be too hard to train two dogs at once for someone who has never owned before..

I am looking at getting 2 male rottweiler puppies.

Thoughts?

Two males is a bad idea, especially for a novice pet owner. Same sex pairs are a lot more likely to not get along and may end up fighting. Are you prepared to spend the entire lives of the dogs having to keep them in separate rooms?

A Rottweiler is a really stong breed of dog, and one puppy is plenty for you to learn with. I would get one, enroll in obedience classes, learn how much work it is to take care of and train one dog and when your first pup is mature (2-3 years old) start looking for a new puppy at that point. You don't want to get two puppies and get overwhelmed and end up having two untrained, crazy Rottweilers.

It's a lot easier to train one dog, have it really well trained and then bring another dog into the picture than it is to try and raise two puppies… that would just be chaos. If the first dog is really well trained and obedient, the second puppy will also pick up and learn from the first dogs actions.

I got my second pit bull when my first was only 10 months old, and if I could go back I would've waited. Two puppies is A LOT of work. Now I have years of experience and do rescue, but I still wouldn't get two puppies :)

I don't think you should get 2 puppies at the same time. Imagine the 2 puppies at their teething period, you are going to have double trouble, one bite on the couch, the other somewhere else. and also you have to think about the future. If both puppies get too attached, there will be very high chances that they will die one after another in a short while (eg. 1 die at 10am the other die at 7pm or the next day)

It's better to get a puppy and after you trained him well enough, get another puppy for the following year.

Honestly I wouldn't start with 2, not with it being such a strong breed. Just my 2 cents with my experience dealing with large strong breeds. Especially it being your first pet. Good luck in your decision.

Honestly, 2 puppies at the same time can be a tad overwhelming for even someone who is very experienced with dogs. So with a person who has no experience, this will probably be very overwhelming.

Why not get just one? Or better yet, go to a shelter and adopt an adult rottie who might be trained a bit. Then maybe when you feel more experienced and have the necessary resources, you could get another dog.

Owning two isnt much different than one, but I would get one than maybe get another one later on. If a breeder is willing to sell you two, you may want to reconsider getting any dog from the breeder.

If you do go for it, Socialize as you would any puppy. http://www.flyingdogpress.com

You would be wiser to get one now and then another one later. If you get two litter mates they will have a tendency to bond strongly o each other and not put you in the role of leadership.

Rottweilers are great dogs – I would get one and start to train it for about 2 months and then get another. Good luck

Only if you have the time and $ to properly train and socialize them. They must be neutered also.
Rotties are wonderful dogs if kept by responsible owners. This breed does not need any more negative press. A Rottweiler is not a great choice for a first time uneducated dog owner.

DO NOT LISTEN TO KATE C. Horrible advice wow.

Ok first off since this is going to be your first dog I would really recommend getting only one. Raising two puppies is a terrible idea as you want to be seen as the alpha male of the pack and when you have two puppies at once chances are you are going to be more than willing to let them play with each other all the time. This causes extreme training problems and leader issues because they will 100% find playing with each other more fun than playing with you.

Due to your inexperience it should not even be thought of to get two puppies at once. If you are truly wanting two puppies then I would suggest getting one first and after about six months of PROPERLY raising that one then decide for yourself if you can handle another.

    Good luck!

Oh for the love of this breed…. look at those answers!

And good lord a good breeder will NOT NOT NOT sell you two puppies. That a huge red flag. RUN from that breeder. Not to mention this is a highly same sex aggressive breed.(plus, littermates will likely fight, regardless of genders)

I gotta be honest this is not only a very VERY bad idea, but rottweilers are not a starter breed…. and here are just a few reasons why. http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/general-info/57934-why-rottweiler-not-everyone.html

Please, for the good of the dogs do not go ahead with this. Two littermates, two males, from a backyard breeder, with a totally novice owner…. is an absolute disaster waiting to happen.

I wouldn't do it. Rotties need training and socialization from day one, with 2 you will not be able to give enough training time to both dogs. Give it at least 2 years in between, you will need that to recoup.
Plus the whole issues of double poop/pee, housebreaking, double vet bills, flea meds, heart worm preventive, neutering, food, toys etc. Keep in mind all the flea and heart worm meds are administered per pound of the dog and you are going to have the large size dogs. :) )
My 2 Rottie males get along great but they are both neutered and have extensive training and socialization.

Two puppies can work in some situations.
Not in this one, I'm afraid.
If you've never owned a dog, a Rottie is not a good idea to begin with. They need an experienced owner.
Getting two Rottie pups to raise together would almost certainly prove to be beyond your capabilities. Training them both would be next to impossible.
And two male Rotties. Not a good idea. Two strong, confident dogs fighting for dominance and attention?
    Watch out.
I would suggest maybe adopting an older dog, and a puppy later, or two puppies of a less demanding breed. Maybe even just one dog to begin with, so you get used to dog ownership.
