Best dry food for rottweiler puppy?
i have rottweiler puppy which is around 4 months old, for about 1 half months he had been eating Science Plan Puppy Large Breed Food, alot of people have told royal canine is better. Is this true and why. Should i stick to Hill's.My puppys coat is really shiny and is growing well.
Both Science Plan and Royal Canin are low quality dog foods, actually. They may be expensive, but if you look at the ingredients, they are far from impressive. Vets recommend them because they get kickbacks from the companies for doing so, plus vets actually get /very/ little training on pet nutrition during their schooling.
You want something with meat as the first ingredient and without by-products, dyes, synthetic preservatives, or corn (called maize in UK pet foods it seems) preferably. These look pretty good:

Edit: Please disregard the people telling you the food is a good one… especially the ones recommending an even /lower/ quality dog food (Purina… Iams… yuck!).
Edit x2: gsd, American Natural Premium concerns me. It makes claims of no corn and yet… read the ingredients list here: http://www.americannaturalpremium.com/Basic
Do you see 'whole ground corn'? I sure do. Yet, when it breaks down the ingredients underneath: http://www.americannaturalpremium.com/Basic
No mention of corn ingredient we saw previously. It even goes so far as to say at the bottom:
"We want to guarantee you that our food is made in Wisconsin and is free of any wheat, wheat gluten, corn, or corn gluten and we use the whole rice in our recipe, no parts or by-products are used and nothing is shipped in from other countries."
Lookin' a little shady here?
Edit x3: Kate is right, a puppy as big as a Rottie should have been on adult food from the start. Puppies this big should not be fed on puppy food at all. I'd switch him/her over to an adult formula.

If the science diet is working for your pup leave him on it, never change food that works for your dog. Don't worry about what people say is better what matters is what you want and what works for your individual pup

You can keep using the brand you use now, because he has a healthy body. I do recommend for little puppies, Iams minichuncks. THey are smaller and a little softer for puppies to chew on. Try using it!

I think that if your dog is healthy and has a shiny coat it is very good but i also think having strong bones is good so try mixing in a little of purina puppy chow good luck! =)

my brain and my dogs past food made him healthy *we used purina puppy chow*
Science Diet is not a very good quality food. You should also have him on adult food by now, otherwise all those calories and protein in the puppy food can make him grow too fast and he could have joint problems when he gets older. If you want to stick with Science Diet go ahead, but please put him on adult food at least. If you want to swich his food I highly recommend American Natural Premium. There original 40 lb. bag is only around $30. If you can't find a place that sells it, let me know and I will give you a great place you can buy it from. Have fun with your puppy! Here is the site for American Natural Premium:

ADD: Please don't listen to the previous four answerers. They all recommended just as bad foods. Purina is a borderline food (not very good but not too bad either) and Iams is a HORRIBLE food to feed your dog.

He should've been on adult food all along.
I would look into solid gold mmelinia, innova
taste of the wild(als), canidae ALS, wellness.
Any adult food at or below 23% percent give or take a couple unless ALS. Stick with that food for two years then switch to a higher quality food or stick with the food you decided on.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com figure out what your current food rates and stay in the 5 to 6 star range when choosing a new food after two years of age for your rottie.

If you are going to slander about a dog food on the web you better get your facts straight. There is no corn in any American Natural Premium dog foods. I challenge anyone to go to the site and show me where you see corn. There is no corn in the plant. No nasty corn dust or mites. The company uses all fresh American made products with no corn wheat or soy.
I know for a FACT that a large breed dog such as a rottweiler should NOT be given adult food from the beginning! This causes them to grow too quickly and cause strain on their joints! Please do more research before it negatively effects your dog's health. Puppy food is just fine until 16-24 months of age.
