I Need to Train My Rottweiler Puppy Soon?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I just got a rotti pup a few weeks ago. Shes almost 3 months old. What are some good websites/books to train her to be nice and gentle but at the same time protect my family. I dont want to hire a trainer and pay too much.

I feel it is best, especially with a rottie, to train them yourself anyways.
To train a rottie, it’s all about the tone of voice you use. You punish with your voice and you praise with your voice.
Rotties are very willing to learn, and are fairly easy to train if you train them correctly, which must be done from the beginning and as soon as possible.
Well, back to training. When your girl does something bad, you need use a very firm, strict, deep voice to correct her. Every mistake MUST be corrected, every little thing. The rottie is a breed that must have a leader, so you MUST assert yourself and be the leader. No dog should be hit, but no dog should go without punishment, and the rottie is a breed that you can’t let one little thing go because once you let one thing go, they will start asserting themself, which is how you will end up with a bad rottie. You must show this dog you are her leader.
I already said about punishing, so lets talk about praise. When your girl does something good, you need to use a very high, happy tone to show her you are happy with her. If you train with your tone, she will love to get you to use your happy voice, because rotties strive to please their leader, so make sure you use a very happy tone to praise her.
as long as you train this way, i guarantee you will have an excellent rottweiler.

Taking your dog to a class is worthwhile because it teaches you how to communicate effectively with your dog. Trainers are available for anything that comes up during the week, not just in class. They give you worksheets and support to help you through everything. They are worth the money, by far. You can a certified, qualified trainer here:

If you take a training class, you should be able to find one for $160. That would be for six to seven classes plus having a trainer available by phone and/or email during the week to answer your questions. Our trainers are available for the lifetime of our dog. That was well worth the $160 pricetag. The puppy class helped socialize our pup to other dogs, taught us how to communicate with her and also helped us find playmates for her. We still have playdates with those puppies over a year later! It helps her burn off extra energy and also helps keep her socialized.

If you still want to do it on your own, here is a site with printable training sheets:

Your dog is going to be naturally protective of you if it lives inside the house as a family member. Training will help to bond your dog to you as will sleeping inside the house. You won’t ever need to train your dog to be protective. It’s instinctive to them to want to protect their pack.

Socialize, socialize, socialize. Take this puppy everywhere you can. The more people she meets as a puppy, the better an adult she will be.

Congrats on your new family member. Rotties are such great family dogs!

While rottweilers ain’t bred to guard like Dobermans there will still protect you and your family in the right circumstances so don’t worry about that.

Train her by using positive voice and treats.

    Best of luck.

i have a female rottweiler who is 8 months old now, i got her when she was 6 weeks and started the training the day she came home. i didnt pay a trainer and she is now trained. you just need to be consistant with your puppy, like set rules is it allowed on the furniture, is it allowed upstairs ect. roxi (my rottweiler) was so easy to train by the age of 4 months she could sit, lie down, roll over, come and stay. she walks perfect on and off her lead. rottweilers really dont get enough credit for how clever they are and fast they learn. its all down to common sense really when training a dog but if you do need help there are plenty of web sites just google rottweiler training. as for protecting your family they will do that its natural to them to want to protect you and the family. if you train your pup in the right way you will have a very loving and loyal dog. good luck
