Rottweiler for Search and Rescue?

Thursday, May 26th, 2011
Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

Id like to train my american rott for search and rescue, a lot of people said he would be excellent for it. He is a year and half about and i was wondering if anybody has a good site or book recomendation to get started. My dog will only listen to my fiance and i though, so i really cant just go toss him at a trainer. Also i feel its bonding with your dog. Id like some tips also if anybody can give me some. Thanks xx

There is not such dogs as an American Rott, Rottweilers are Rottweilers and they originated in Germany.

You have to have a trainer and if the dog will only listen to you I doubt he has the drive for search and rescue. Call a local club and have him evaluated

Are There Any Rottweiler Rescues Near Delaware?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Looking for a pure bred rottweiler, but if possible want to get one from a rescue instead of going to a breeder. Trying to stay as close to Delaware as possible.

Do a simple web search for:"Rottweiler Rescue in Maryland." I’m sure you will find at least one.

20 Month Rottweiler Puppy Humps Her Pillow?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I rescued a 20 month old female rottweiler who by the way is spayed. She has started humping her pillow, is this normal. This behavior has come out of no where what should I do?

Don’t make a big issue of this behaviour for starters. Quietly stop this activity as soon as it starts, and if necessary, remove the pillow at least at the time. But keep your reaction ‘light’ – ‘you silly girl!’. I also suggest you up her exercise. Sometimes this behaviour is an outward expression of too much pent up energy – frustration (not sexual).

The dog is not a pure bred, the coloring is off. Possibly some pitbull mixed in there. Not a bad looking dog, but pretty overweight.

Can a Boxer Survive a Rottweiler Attack?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

My next door neighbor loves my dog so much that he wants a big dog. He decided on a boxer. He got one from a rescue full grown. After a few weeks we planned on getting our dogs to meet each other at a park. His boxer saw my dog through the fence and now tries to jump the 6.5 foot fence. Could he jump it and would he be able to survive going in a rottweilers territory. My dog is usually good with other dogs, but he only lets one dog in his territory and that is our chihuahua.

Whether he could survive or not depends entirely on the severity of the injuries, if he were to be attacked. That isn’t something that can be predicted. Aside from that, your dog could still be injured too, and your chihuahua could easily be killed by a larger dog.

Given that you have these concerns, the best thing you can do is talk to your neighbor about training his boxer to stay in his own yard. Should the dog ever get into your yard, it would be the neighbor who is at fault, as your dogs would be on their own property. Still, talk to the neighbor about working on training the boxer to stay in his own yard in the first place, before something DOES happen.

Can a Rottweiler Make a Good Search and Rescue Dog?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I am now more interested in getting a Rottweiler more than any other dog, i know they say there police dogs, so I am whondering how well do you think or know they are as Search and Rescue dogs, i seen on a info website about the rott, breed and say they are good at tracking now is that the same or no, can anyone who knows pls answer……………………Thanks…………….

YES! They are such capable and versatile dogs and can most definitely excell as in SAR work. Finding a reputable breeder is paramount especially with a rottweiler. So look on your local clubs website as a good place to start. Talk to the breeder(if that is the route you go instead of adopting) and tell them you want to do SAR.

SAR dogs need confidence, prey drive and bidability(desire to work and please). Rotties are good at those things so its just a matter of finding a good breeder and parents with those qualities; which of course are correct for a rottie.

Good luck!

What Should I Know Before Adopting an Adult, Rescued Rottweiler?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

He is 2 years old, and proven to be good with kids and other dogs according to his foster Mom. Any rescuers out there have any tips/advice?

makesure his vaccinations are upto date. makesure he is neutered.
get his medical history and his pedigree papers if he has some.
find out what he is eating and buy some of that food in (even if you dont want to feed him on that food its best to gradually introduce him onto tthe new food).
get him a bed, collar, name tag ect…

I Want to Rescue/adopt A….?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

ive been thinking and i would really like to rescue/adopt a rottweiler puppy instead of buying one. Anybody have any ideas where i can get one thats also nice and i wont have problems socializing. I live in New Jersey

You likely won’t find a young purebred puppy in rescue, however there are plenty of Rottie mixes in shelters and if you are willing to take an older puppy or adult dog plenty of purebred Rotties in shelters and breed rescue. "nice" is a matter of genetic temperament combined with socialization which you have no idea of knowing about with a puppy from rescue with an older dog you will have a good idea of temperament.
