I wish I knew how to prevent my neighbor’s dog from barking when it was really loud. They were always leaving their screen door open when they were away. Both of the dogs barely took a minute to breathe since they were too busy barking almost 24/7. Even though I filled in many noise compaints, it did me no good. The two dogs annoyed everybody in the neighborhood, not only me. The noise wouldn’t let any of us have a good night’s sleep; they wouldn’t stop during the day either.
I know that barking is what dogs are supposed to do, whenever there is need. There are situations when barking is really necessary. A dog can be left outside by mistake, it can get lonely, it can be hurt or anxious at something, or it can simply feel frustrated when being locked up. Or it can bark when it finds something very intriguing. For some dogs, it is actually a learned behavior that is negatively reinforced by giving the dogs special attention and even treats to hopefully pacify and quiet the dogs down. In reality, it is showing the dogs that this is a good behavior and that if they want more attention, all they need to do is to continue barking more.
It’s not a great idea to leave your dog outside. It will make it bark even louder, plus that extreme temperatures can make it ill. Some dog owners place their dogs in crates while they’re gone but this is a bad idea, especially if they’re away for more than four hours at a time. There are also things to try such as a gate or even a large pen area where he can see out of and be able to create a den of his own in a room like the kitchen or laundry area. Do not forget that the dog also needs a bathroom. Buy it a litter tray, or use a pile of newspapers in the farthest corner of the room. A better alternative would be to make it a doggie door so it can go outside to do its business.
So let’s say you have done all of the above and perhaps even more and your dog insists on constantly barking or perhaps it is your neighbor’s dog that is doing this annoying habit-what then? Perhaps a bark collar might be the answer. If it’s the neighbor’s dog that’s so loud, and you don’t want to confront its owner face to face, write him a letter in which you explain the situation and ask him to take the appropriate measures. Your neighbor probably doesn’t even realise that his dog annoys everyone while he is gone. If he doesn’t pay attention to your letter, you may write him again or, better, confront him directly and suggest him to buy his dog a bark collar.
