I adopted a 5 year old rottweiler yesterday. His seems to have an awesome personality but he is overweight. Im afraid that because of his weight and his age that he wont live to long. I want to get him to loose some weight so he is healthier. If I do get him to lose weight will that make him have a healthier longer life? And what are some ways I can get him to lose weight? How much should I exercise him without over exercising him?
Take for at least 2 walks a day. Start off with 30 min. walks & increase the time by 10 mins. per day until he gets 1 hr. walk per day or even work up to 2 hrs. per day. Just make sure that he gets plenty of water to drink & two meals a day.

my dog is obese and we are trying this but people in my family just keep giving her crap
give him exercise, maybe 1-2 1/4 mile walks a day and some outside time. Make sure you have healthy food,(no bad table scraps) plus give him lots of love!
I think this will help him live longer!

Buy a good quality dog food. Feed according to the directions on the bag. Slowly increase your dog’s exercise, starting with 30 minute walks. Increase the briskness of them until he can do the walk at a good clip, then start extending the walks in 10 minute increments. Before you know it, your dog will be slimming down. You’ll be able to play with him actively with a frisbee and throwing a ball for him to chase, etc.

Yes if you get him to lose weight it will make him live a longer happier life. Overweight dogs are more prone to hip and joint issues. Talk to your vet about how much is over-exercising him. if he likes to fetch that is one way fun game, take him on walks, go bike riding with him, let him play with other dogs. Make sure that when introducing these exercises you make it fun for him so that he will love to do them.

Start off with shorter walks and gradually make them longer. You can also take him out several times a day to help. Start off small and work up. Also keeping him active and playing with him during the day will help! Make sure to feed him high quality food. Don’t feed him too many treats during the day and if you are training him or doing an activity where you reward with lots of treats, cut back on his dinner a little bit. Maybe he has been getting fed too much, try cutting back on his food — only if it’s too much, not as a way of dieting him!

It is good you want him to lose weight. It is much healthier for the dog, and will improve his life. First, feed him a low fat diet. Sometimes dog food is too unhealthy for older obese dogs, so I would recommend buying Flint River Ranch senior dog food. I use it for my 6 year old dog and it helps him keep fit and is good for his joints. You should take him on slow walks for about 30 min. every day. If he can go faster, let him, he will let you know if he had had enough. I hope I helped. By the way, senior years of dogs are the best! Thanks for adopting an older dog, there are just too many in shelters now.

A wellness check by the vet should be scheduled for your new dog.
They can determine what exercise and how much is safe.
Generally one feeds an overweight animal the amount for desired weight goal. You can also split it up into two meals.

Congratulations on your adoption! I can only tell you from my own personal experience what I am doing to get some weight off my girl. First off, your rottie is going to needs LOTS of exercise, EVERY DAY. Do you have a dog park in your area? If not, load up on balls and Frisbees and get him out to a park, ball field, or a decent size back yard. Also, don’t forget walks! Two a day for 30 mins. Next, food. Look at what you are feeding. Is it a good, quality food that was bought at a pet store or feed store? If not, you need to do some research. (I feed Wellness healthy weight). My vet also suggested that I feed vegs. with one of my dogs meals. I usually feed her carrots, peas, broccoli, and cauliflower. (I vary them). It’s tough. I have been working on getting a few pounds off my dog, and so far she has only dropped 12 ounces! ugh. But, keep up a routine and be consistent. I wish you the best! :}

Get him to your vet now for a complete wellness exam. Start him on a low calorie diet of a GOOD food. Feed small portions 3 times a day.
Start exercise slowly. Watch his reaction.. As he starts to loose weight, longer more intense exercise.
And yes, there is a good possibility a dog with a normal weight will live longer and healthier.
Don’t expect the weight to come off quickly. Probably take 3 to 5 months.
Thank you for rescuing.

Do NOT follow the directions on the bag — this is the shortest route to a fat dog! Feed less. The exact amount depends on the dog’s size, metabolism and exercise level.
You have other good responses, but that one was way off so I wanted to address it.

My dogs eat dry dog food. When I train them I use that food as treats. So, if I were to train her this morning I would take the 1 1/2 cups of food and instead of putting that in a dish and letting her woof that down I would feed it to her one piece at a time as a training reward (some times I will give her a "jack pot" of five or ten pieces to keep it interesting).
If there are allot of people around who give them food (like pizza crusts or what ever) I cut down what I feed them accordingly.
If you get one of those treat bags that you can clip onto your waist you can hand feed the dog every piece of food it gets and have the dog earn it by doing a sit or down or what ever.
I agree that keeping a dogs weight down is doing the dog a tremendous favour and not being cruel or hard on the dog. They live longer as you said and have a much more enjoyable life because they don’t feel lazy and lethargic.
I also take them for allot of exercise. We go to the beach to play off leash and get them to run along side the bikes when we can. I put the younger one on the treadmill sometime because she’s crazy hyper.

EAT SOME PROTIEN AT EACH MEAL & AS A SNACK
In addition to everything that? been discussed before, eating protein helps you burn more calories. Jeff Hample, Ph.D., R.D., a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association says that, "Protein is made up mainly of amino acids, which are harder for your body to breakdown, so you burn more calories getting rid of them.?
Just think ?eating a protein rich snack can help you lose weight. How about a few slices of turkey or ham or some string cheese?
Eating protein will also help you feel full so that you are less likely to crave unhealthy snacks.

Beware ‘all or nothing’ thinking’
You know that feeling when you really overdo the chocolate or a night out and think you’ve blown it so may as well give up – and keep on eating… The blow out isn’t a problem, but your reaction could be.
Lapses are a normal part of change. You can’t be, nor need to be perfect 100% of the time to lose weight. Doing well 80-90% of the time is great progress. Rather than feel you have failed and give up, look at what you can learn from a bad day or week and plan to do things differently in the future. Then forgive, talk positively to yourself about what you have achieved already, and get back on track.

Don’t be so sweet.
Numerous studies have linked table sugar to increased calorie consumption. While sugar doesn’t do as much dietary damage as fat, you’ll find that when you eat sweets, you simply want to eat more… of everything. Not only that, but sugar also makes your body excrete chromium, and chromium is a mineral that helps your body build calorie-burning lean tissue – so you want to keep your chromium levels up.

Drink up.
“If people want to keep their nutrients in balance, they need to drink plenty of plain, unflavored water every day,” says Judy Dodd, R.D., past president of the American Dietetic Association. Water not only acts as a solvent for many vitamins and minerals but also is responsible for carrying nutrients into and wastes out of cells, so the body functions properly. As a rule of thumb, you should drink a half-ounce of water for every pound of body weight daily, unless you’re very active, in which case you should increase your water intake to two-thirds of an ounce per pound of body weight daily. So if you weigh 100 pounds, you should drink 50 ounces of water a day as a minimum
