How Old Do Rottweiler Puppies Need to Be to Leave Their Mother?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

My Rottweiler puppies are now 6 weeks old and we were wondering when to let them leave. Their mother has been leaving them for longer times.

8 weeks is the general rule of thumb. A reputable breeder will want to keep the puppies 10-12 weeks…(usually closer to 10) so that the puppies can socialize within their litter and learn from siblings and mom. The breeder should also begin handling them and showing them general good manners and basic obedience…no, no one expects them to be perfectly trained at that age, but a good breeder will handle the pups so as to set the stage for a balanced and well mannered pet.

8 weeks ~ spay your dog and stop being a backyard breeder. Spay/neuter all puppies before they go to their new homes as well. Better yet, give the puppies to the humane society and they will spay your dog for free and make sure the puppies go to good homes and are spayed/neutered.

6 weeks ~ way too young for puppies to be away from their mother/backyard breeder. This is usually how young backyard breeders get rid of their puppies. They want to get rid of puppies ASAP.

Often, BYBs breed dogs with faults. This perpetuates fault and problems in the breed. They do nothing to prove their dogs are of sound temperament and that they are breeding good representatives of the breed, etc. They just breed. And often, they do not even breed purebreds. Some BYBs "create" neat sounding things and think they are breeds – like Dalimers. This was seen listed in the Washington Post as a rare, German breed. Well, they are mutts – crosses of Dalmatians and Weimeraners, nothing more than a back yarder trying to make a buck

Ten weeks is best right now. It’s ILLEGAL to sell a dog under eight weeks old, 10-12 weeks is by far the BEST and what any reputable breeder would go for/suggest.

Their mother is leaving them because they’re getting teeth and claws, so it hurts to nurse them. You should have [helped] start the weaning process 2 weeks ago. I hope you know some forever homes and not just strangers or people from a Newspaper. Make sure you researched thorougly; the buyers etc. [Copy and Paste this into your URL] Here’s a link on questions to ask buyers- http://devinefarm.net/articles/contract.htm

How much are you selling your puppies for? Make sure they get their first set of shots at 8 weeks old, before they leave. Then get microchipped. They’re an accidental litter most likely, therefore should only be sold for $10-30.

8 weeks is the absolute soonest they should leave.

Now do the world a favor and stop Back Yard Breeding.
