What do you think of this breed… No stupid comments, only people who have owned a Rottweiler. Also I wanted to add how does a PROPERLY TRAINED rotty act when going for a walk or being around unknown people ??
yeah cause it was either that or a doberman, but i heard that rotty’s shed alot so iunno.
Well a dog is a dog. yeah they have different attitudes and such but i’m not getting a "smaller dog" just cause its my first dog. Iam not taking it to any training class what a waste of money, i’ll just spend alot of time & effort training it at home, my question wasnt if you took your rottweiler to get trained or not…
My fiancee has a Rottweiler and I have lived with him
On walks he does not try to attack cats or people. He loves everything. He is the sweetest dog I know and wouldn’t hurt a fly.
He isn’t really trained either.

Quite a good breed, but can be a bit aggressive. Don’t have them around small kids. They also need lots on exercise and a big backyard. How it would react around people depends on the dog. If it’s well trained then you should be able to control it.

They are wonderful dogs. Great family dogs and companions.
The key is to find a reputable breeder who breeds also for temperament. With the right training and socialisation you will have years of enjoyment together.
Find a good breeder that is the most important tip I can give you.

I have a 10 yr old Rottweiler that I adopted last year, and she has turned out to be one of the best dogs I have ever owned. She is extremely loving, kind, and gentle towards children and small animals.
She does have an aversion towards cars and other dogs (the exception is my chi/beagle mix), but besides that she is absolutely perfect. I couldn’t ask for a better dog. =)

Rottweilers are cool dogs but I prefer Dobermans

Hello! I had two Rottys at the same time. They are the sweetest breed! They are big and friendly. If it is your first dog I wouldn’t get a Rotty. They are hard to train. When they 8 months or so we took them to a cops dog training place. There they were properly trained. Rottys are VERY strong so they can be scary, all though if they are trained like ours were they will listen to every comand you give them, they won’t move unless you tell them to and when you walk them they will be perfectly fine with kids and unkonow people. If a person comes and trys to steal something anywere (like your bag on in the house) they will attac at your comand. If you aren’t home and the dog is unfermiliar with that person it will pin him down until you come back. Thats how they will act if the are proberly train!

Owned one grew up with 4 in the family in general. All were good lovable dogs. On walks they barely even noticed people unless they were loud and then it was just a quick look but no jumping, no growling etc. The only bad rotts i have ever encountered belonged to my long time nxt door neighbors.
Two big agressive males who whenever they got loose(slamming into the gate) would knock over ever garbage can on the block, trap people in cares and the one time they got into our yard, my mother and I were getting ready to leave for the morning so the gate for the driveway was open, they went after our two Cocker spaniels while they were in their outside crate. that was the only time i was ready to do something stupid to keep them from possibly shaking the cage open and getting to the dog. At the time our rott who was half their size was in the dog run on the side of the house.
Eventually they were put down after numerous complaints and unfortunately killing a family’s puppy and taking it home. At large the breed is filled with well bred and well mannered dogs.

Rottweiler’s are a good breed of dog. They will protect their owners…but sometimes can lean toward the aggressive side. However, a lot of this has to do with how they are brought up, if you are getting a puppy and you are a good, kind, responsible pet owner (which I am sure you are otherwise you wouldn’t be researching the breed) you should be fine. If adopting a shelter dog just be choosy and try to get as much information on the background of the dog as possible…maybe stay away from ones that were abuse cases unless you are really trained in handling dogs.

i dont think it matters on the breed ,a pomerainian could attack a child, its just the degree of damage they do, if your getting this dog to look big then dont. i would recomend a breed you know something about, ive known people with rotweilers some have been lovely some have been horrid and been given to security firms as their to vicious and he was of a reputible breeder. it all depends on the owner with any dog, ive had a pit and she was lovely because we treat her right. but if you are not confident with bigger dogs do not get one. all properly trained dogs act……properly trained, but having the patience and time and nerves with a rotty as they will test u is another matter, please think carefully the last thing ur neighbours want is a phyco rotty lol good luck x x

I had a teacher in 8th grade whose Rottweiler had a Utility title (competition Obedience.)
She was docile, sweet, focused on her owner and totally obedient. She could be trusted off-leash in a classroom full of kids (she brought the dog to school on a couple of special occasions). Loved attention and greeted everyone with tail-wags. Awesome dog.
It took several years of hard work to get her dog to this level…..but if you’re not interested in competition it only takes a relatively small amount of effort to train and socialize your Rottweiler to where it’ll have good manners.
Genetics play a part in the temperament of the breed, and there are a lot of dumb breeders out there selling oversized, overly aggressive versions of the Rottweiler. They are not supposed to be a huge, Mastiff-sized dog….average weight is supposed to be 70-100 lbs. They are not supposed to be a snarling guard dog, they are supposed to be an even tempered, alert family dog who is protective only when necessary. It is important, if you are buying a puppy, to find a responsible breeder. Someone who is a member of the Rottweiler Club and who shows or works their dogs, and has all the necessary health tests done.
Socializing a puppy early is also key…..the more the dog learns about different people, the better able he/she is to react appropriately in all different situations. A confident dog is more likely to be friendly and approachable in normal situations, but if the need arises to protect, the dog will be bold and confident, not hesitating to do what’s needed.
ADD: While it’s not necessary to take your dog to a "training class" per se…..if you train by yourself, it’s important that once you get the commands down, you bring your dog to places outside your home, to practice his training.
If you train only in your backyard and in your home, you’ll quickly find that when you go to the vet, or bring your dog to a public place, he’s overwhelmed by all the new sights, smells, people, and other dogs and all that training will go out the window!
Best thing to do….as soon as the pup has his shots, is get your dog out in public and expose him to as many different sights, smells, sounds and people as you possibly can. Doing this will make it much easier to bring him in public and expect him to obey you and behave nicely. And again it will not affect his ability to be a good protector….a dog who is familiar with "normal human behavior" is also much quicker to recognize *abormal* human behavior and react appropriately!

Depends on the breeder. If the breeder is breeding guard dogs you probably don’t want to purchase your dog from them, as they are bred to be agressive.
Rotties have a bad reputation, they are large dogs, but once they have gotten through their puppy stage and have received proper training they are the sweetest dogs around. They look mean, but they are big babies at heart.
I would inquire with your Vet for information on good breeders who breed for companion animals not guard.
Best of Luck

Rotties are awesome dogs, in general. If buying from the breeder, ask to meet the parent dogs. You can tell alot about any dog’s future temperment by their parents. Make sure to ask the breeder about inbreeding, and line breeding. They are a little different, but even too much line breeding can cause problems with both health and temperment. One of the biggest things to remember with most large dogs is socialization. Almost all of them will get mean if they are left on a chain by themselves, and never get to play or interact with people and other animals.
Invest in some good training books. With Rotties, you have to be firm, so that they know you are top dog, but you never need to be mean. They like rules that don’t change. If it isn’t ok to grab food off the plate now, it’s never ok to steal food off a plate.
Introduce your new dog to everything and everyone possible. Even a well socialized Rottie will be protective of it’s people, as long as it is treated right. If the dog spends alot of time with you, it will pick up clues from you about what is ok, and what is not.
I have had my Rottie for over 8 years now, and she still thinks she’s a puppy. My kids(10 & 5) think she’s the greatest dog in the world. My cats give her kisses whenever she comes in, and my other dogs try to clean her face for her every time she turns around.
The only problem we’ve ever had is that she pulls on a regular collar. I solved this by getting a Halti, like a horse halter, but for a dog. Now my daughter walks her all over town.

Okay lemme tell you. I have had rottweilers my whole life. I currently have 4 male rottis and one female pup . she is 8 months old.
She is amazing! I take her out to the park daily. she loves people. when kids come near. she sits down so she doesnt overpower them. shes really gentle.
however. an unproperly trained rotti is quite dangerous, they are powerful dogs, they are stubborn, strong, and have a mind of their own.
but you know, you get over all that if you raise it inside the house with the family! they are just the sweetest, loyal, incredible dogs. i love em ..
