Rottweiler - First Aid Helps

Before you buy or adopt your Rottweiler it would pay to consider that you buy it only from reputable and responsible breeder and that its parents have the necessary health clearances. As with all breeds, Rottweilers too can fall prey to many Rottweiler health problems which may even be genetic or viral.

Help for Rottweiler with chronic ear infections?
Our two-year old Rottie has had chronic ear infections since she was about six months old. Has anyone had experience with this or found a good remedy? Prescrips from the vet seem to provide only temporary relief. Her ears are constantly moist, smelly, and full of nasty-smelling reddish-brown residue. She scratches at them constantly and is miserable!

Mine uses benadryl every day because the vet says its an allergy.

Sounds like your Rotti is allergic to some thing and that it is adding to her ear infections.
What are you feeding her?? I would look for a food that is corn, wheat, soy free and no by products in it. This helped my dogs out tremendiously!

I feed Canisae all life stages! You should look into it! I also use this to help clean my dogs ears:

Hope this helps!

I had a dog with chronic ear infection and as soon as I would cure it, it would come back until the meds stopped working altogether. The vet mixed some meds together and called it "Purple Thunder" which helped, again, only for a little while until he became immune to it. He was old, had gone deaf and became incontinent and with his incurable ear infection, I decided to euthanize him.

Dogs with floppy ears tend to have chronic ear problems. Here is a link to information.

I would talk to your vet about culturing the ear. When the vet prescribes medications they are usually broad spectrum and are targeted to the most common types of bacteria/yeast found in the ear. Culturing the ear would allow the vet to know what bacteria is actually growing in the ear and to prescribe the appropriate medication and strength. There's talk on this post about allergies. It is true that most dogs manifest their allergies in the form of itchy skin, ear infections, and full anal glands. You should discuss this with your vet. I would clean your dog's ears at least once weekly with a cleaner, making sure that you dry out the ear afterwards. Also something to discuss with your vet, if the ear is bad enough, a procedure called a TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation) where the ear canal and all secretory tissues are removed. This puts a permanent stop to ear infections, but it should be reserved as a last resorts, as the procedure is painful, invasive, and costly.
