I am asking this because just a few minutes ago my 4 months old rottweiler was asleep and my cousin was coming down the stairs and Tyson stood up and growled. He only growls at these sort of things sometimes.
I am wondering, will he do this all the time when he ‘matures’ ?
What age will he REALLY show his protective instincts?
Never if you train him PROPERLY.
If you encourage his protective instincts then you will have a problem on your hands.
If this is what you are hoping for then you will get more than you bargained for, as this is what can lead to problems if you think this is ok.
I teach my dogs that I look after them, not they look after me. They’d be there if I ever really needed them. But if you let them think that they look after you then you have lost the leadership – end of – you’ll never control a male rottie like that.
Firm – fair boundaries with you at the helm.

He might of been spooked, my friend as a rottweiler and she is the sweetest to people she knows real well, tell your cousin not to give him the time of day, this will make him want your cousin’s attention, this always works with happenstance(my friends rottweiler) he’s probably not gonna get worse if he knows the person, also don’t let people get right in his face, this aggravates the dog and will make him bite or attack.

define protective instincts? unprovoked fear aggression is not protection.

…do u want him to show them or not?
rotts are a very protective breed… my rott was about 9 months at the time and whenever my boyfriend (or my dad, an uncle, the mail MAN.. any male really) came over.. he would go crazy and bark until no end… of course i never trained him not to be protective because the main reason we got a rott was for security.. (i fell in love with the breed after i realised how sweet they are)
but i always thought it was the cutest thing! protecting his owner…
it depends on how u train them i guess… right now hes showing u protective instincts

Just because it is a Rott doesn’t mean he will be mean. You have to train it. Either to completely stop the aggressive behavior or instill controls on the aggression.
I strongly suggest that you stop the behavior while the pup is still young. & if in the future (when the dog matures at about 2 or 3) train it in aggression that way you have control of the aggression & no one gets hurt. A non trained aggressive dog is just trouble cause you cannot control the aggression.
