Do You Have to Train Dobermans and Rottweilers to Fetch or Does It Come Naturally?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I know dogs like Labs, golden retrievers and a few other breeds have retrieving come almost naturally to them. Is the same with Dobermans and Rottweilers?

I only ask because my brother just got Doberman and Rottweiler puppies and he wanted to know if he would have to do a lot of training to get them to fetch.

Every dog has to ‘learn’ what you want him to do….Comes easier to some dogs then others…

So, Yes he would have to train them…

It depends on the individual dog.
Retrievers generally retrieve- but you still have to train some of them. Many dogs will need encouragement to retrieve- and many will develop ocd problems with retrieving items! It depends on the dog!
I had a Lab x Border Collie- a mix of two breeds who are good retrievers- you threw her a stick more than 3 times she would look at you saying ‘if you want it so bad stop throwing it away.’
Alternatley I have known Rottweilers to be ball junkies.

Rottiwelers and Dobermans are both working dogs- and they may very well enjoy chasing balls- it depends on the nature of the individual dog- some are going to be much more relaxed and lazy and not willing to play, and others will love the fun and interaction.

They will fetch the ball (generally), but hes going to have to train them to bring it back to him. He is going to have to do a lot of training owning two working breed puppies at the same time.
