Is Is Possible to Dock a Rottweilers Tail as an Adult?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I've wondered if vets will dock a dogs tail as an adult, without any health issues or anything? Because I'm getting a male rottweiler soon which is 7 weeks, and I was wondering if I can still get his tail cocked at this age or older? I like the look of a rottweiler that has a docked tail, and I'm thinking about showing him later on, if he looks th part. Because the breeder I'm getting him from didn't dock his tail.

After 5 days old (at the absolute latest) it is an amputation and not a dock and must be done under general anesthesia. An amputation is much more painful and has a much longer healing time than a dock, so no most responsible vets will not do a tail amputation on an older puppy or adult dog for cosmetic reasons

You shouldnt ever do that to a dog young or old. they can always have problems no matter what age…let the dog have the tail it was born with

Why would you want your dog to look so hideously unnatural?

Well i guess it would just be like amputating it, except without a medical reason, just cosmetic.

I don't think it will effect the dog in a big way. But remember, dogs use there tails to balance, and without it they might be a little out of there element for a little wile.

It the ignorant BYB who sold thing ***A MONTH TOO YOUNG**** didn't dock at THREE DAYS,it's just JUNK & not worth the time money & hassle.
You *might* find a vet greedy enough….

    But=

DON'T BUY CRAP if you want QUALITY!!!

If the breeder did not dock hes tail then maybe she is not telling you the whole truth. Maybe he is not purebred.

Yes you can get the tail docked. Not all vet will do it so you may have to call around.
I can't grantee that the hair will grow back on the nub.

No, tails are docked at 3 days old. Also, if the breeder did not dock the tail, the pup is certainly NOT show quality. Only the worse of the worse BYB's would not have the pup's tails docked. Just love your dog and have him neutered.

If you are in the UK docking is now illegal ..

You could, but I RECOMEND YOU DONT. It would hurt them, you could get an infection in it also.

And i dot think any vet in thier right mind would. Onl the money hugry ones.

You probably won't be able to. I got my pit at 7 weeks and I couldn't find anyone to crop his ears

There is NOTHING wrong with docking a dogs tail, contrary to what SOME may think.

But your dog is too old, and wouldn't be a show option anyway if you are purchasing a pup from a breeder who is selling too young and didn't dock the tail (that's against standard).

You'll want to consider buying another pup (from a reputable breeder this time) or just going that direction instead of having this pup.

You can always find a vet to do this, but did you know that America is the only country that still maims animals for our own preferences. How about if you take a step away from animal cruelty and don't do it.

Anythings possible….. Vets just discourage you because it's very painful for the animal! If it's done when they're a baby it's different… so much is developing and growing it heals quicker… older animals to get declawed or docked is a very painful process and long healing process increasing risk of infection! But in answer to your question yes it's possible! Good Luck finding a vet to do it, to them it's a big no-no!

Any breed can have his/her tail docked as an adult ONLY IF it is medically necessary. No vet will do it for cosmetic reasons. It is an amputation surgery, which involves part of the spinal column and the closer the tail is cut to the body, the greater the risk for nerve damage/problems. A dog who needs his tail docked will still usually end up with half a tail as long as it's deemed the tail is short enough to prevent further problems.

If you got the dog from a breeder in the US, and the dog's tail is not docked – I'd say there is a 90% chance the dog is not show quality anyway. Almost all show stock breeders in the US still dock tails because the show rings here still "prefer" the docked tails (even though it's banned in Europe)
Then…the fact that you're taking the dog home at 7 weeks pretty much provides the rest of the proof that he's not from a good breeder with show stock.

I have a rotti with his natural tail he is 11 months old I was wondering the same thing when I first got him as a puppy but after letting it go so long I decided not to do the procedure in my opinion my dog is more of a dog with his tail and it doesint look that unusual dont get me wrong I also have a boxer and he has a cropped tail and ears and I could not imagine this breed of dog not to having cropped ears and tail. you can still show your dog if you want standards of dog shows are slowly changing. Were the rotti originates which is germany it is no longer legal to crop the rottis tail. All and all dint let a simple tail stop you from getting a dog it could be your best friend and partner and you would pass that up for having a tail.
