I think people should GET PERMITS to own these dogs.
The PEOPLE should be licensed to own them and handle them responsibly.
Yes, Pits and Rotties get a bad rap, but it is their inbred character if not kept under control that can lead to a disastrous situation.

A city not far from me has banned all ownership of Pitbulls. I don’t think that’s right at all, not every pit is ill bred.

If people own those dogs for protection, it would be safer to own a gun. At least they should be made to have enough insurance to cover their dog killing a child.

The breed of dog is not the problem, it’s those macho irresponsible owners who are at fault. I’ve come across some pretty nasty little poodles, chihuahuas and various other ankle biters in my lifetime. Only dog ever terrified me was a Jack Russell which eventually took a chomp out of my knee. I would suggest they make it a law to closely monitor the breeders of these animals and find out who they supply them to. Rottweilers and pit bulls can be pussycats in the right hands.

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996….[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. The Clifton study of attacks from 1982 through 2006 produced similar results. According to Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes were responsible for 65% of the canine homicides that occurred during a period of 24 years in the USA. U.S. citizens and residents are 12 times more likely to be bitten by a dog than attacked with a gun. Yet we license gun owners but not dog owners.

I only know nice pit bulls. I never met one who acted aggressive towards me, another dog, or anyone else. I myself am a fan of Akitas, who have a similar reputation as pit bulls. it has a lot to do with the care of the animal, than the animal itself.

Any large dog can be dangerous. Doberman, wolfhound, chow-chow etc… The two dogs that you mention are only in the top category because they are the most common canines associated with dog fighting. Hence, they are bred in large numbers to do one thing. Kill. When these animals become bloodthirsty, they begin to enjoy fighting. Then we gamble on them.
Boxing is a popular sport (and UFC.) These men beat each other senseless with their fists! Yet we think it’s socially acceptable and gamble on it as well. How is this any different than dog fighting? Both animals, both fighting, both motivated by greed… Just because some people use their animals for accessories and some for sport, gambling and show, does not mean that we should single out one category and condemn them for being unethical just because a dog dies! Dogs die in hunting accidents on a daily basis! If said dog owners must get a special permit for these dogs then the owners that breed dogs for everything else should have to get one as well.

The people who think pit bulls are mean dogs are fucking idiots. Go look up the breed temperament statistics. Pit Bulls have a better temperament than Golden Retrievers, Poodles, Labradors, German Shepherds and your other "so called" good dogs. Pit Bulls would do anything to please their owners. They’re life is based on how happy they can make their master and that includes doing anything the owner wants. If raised with good people that actually have CLUE of how to raise dogs then Pit Bulls will be the best pets you can ever have! I’ve had a labrador, and german shepherd in the past and when I got my Pit Bulls, I wondered why I didn’t choose this breed before lool! Best dogs ever. Only people that don’t like them are ones who never had one, never met one and do something stupid like believe the media lol
