Why Is It Mostly Pitbulls & Rottweilers in Big City Shelters Etc?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

Why is it mostly Pitbulls & Rottweilers in big city shelters & other animal adoption places?

When I was looking for a new dog to add to my family in 2001 I went to 10 shelter and they had all of the pits & rotts up front with the other "mild tempered" dogs all the way in the back. It took me sometime but I found a 1 year old full breed bordercollie that was at the shelter for 4 1/2 months. They also had two other nice dogs there for the same amount of time.

There's a lot of reasons these dogs are flooding shelters.

The first is that there's a stigma against these breeds right now (Pit Bulls, especially, are the "hot breed" for breed-specific legislation), so people are less likely to adopt them.

The second is that, especially in big cities, people who buy these dogs are completely unprepared to handle very energetic large dogs or lack the space to work them properly. Because of this, you'll see a lot of neurotic behaviors, which can lead to destructive behaviors.

A third is that, yes, there are people who choose these dogs based on their "big, tough" look and train them for guarding or fighting. These dogs probably wouldn't make it up front in an adopting shelter, though.

It's really quite sad. These breeds can both be loving family dogs if someone with the time and knowledge were to own them.

The problem is that people that get those breeds dont know how to control them and keep them in toe so they end up there and because those breeds and many more get such a bad rap that they sit there and than get killed it amazes me i rescue american bulldogs and you see it all the time people give me these dogs that with alittle guidance are great.

Larger dogs tend to be shoved into shelters because the owners couldnt take care of them or afford them.

i too notice a lot of pitbulls rottweilers along with labs and german shepherds in the shelters.

these dogs have bad reps for being agressive. the truth is they are like other dogs. BUT since they are bigger people wont put up with bad behaviour.

These dogs grow quick along with concerns. it sucks that these guys arent given a fair chance.

    congrats on your dog:)

maybe because people dont understand how strong these type of dogs are and dont know how to control them, or just simply fear them as they get bigger and older, I have an 9month old rotti and I can understand how some people are not prepared for their kind of force, my boy is a bloody heffa and his mouthing when he gets a little carried away when playing could scare some one who is not prepared for it. My rotti can be really forceful when he wants to be, if he wants a pat or its dinner time, he has almost bowled me over in his bolt laps around the house, some people just dont know how to handle large dogs and powerful dogs.

As far as Pit Bulls are concerned, they are one of the most popular dogs. They are hearty and have large litters normally. A lot of shady breeders sell them for a cheap price. They are seen running at large often and are picked up and never returned to their owner. Some are taken in different police issues, so they go up for adoption.

And, in today's society dogs are disposable. The sad thing is that for every Pit Bull or Rottweiler you see up for adoption at least 5 more never make it that far. And the main reasoning is over population of shelters.

Many people buy dogs like American Pit Bull Terriers and Rottweilers because they are a status symbol. They think if they have a powerful dog it makes them look tough and masculine. Many of these people don't train their dogs and they end up out of control. The owners then do not want a dog who they cannot control so they give them to a shelter.

I'm not surprised that a pure bred Border Collie has been at the shelter for a while; most people aren't active enough to own one. Too many people buy puppies on impulse, and then have no idea what to do when the little ball of fluff they saw at the pet shop turns into a chewing, barking, pooing little "monster".

because people fight them because they think that they are cool and they really arent and then the dogs end up suffering for it and are known to be mean and just fighting dogs….
