How Long Do Rottweilers to Get Out of the Puppy Stage?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011
Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Rottweiler!

I have a 7 year old Rottie me and my wife rescued from a pound, so we missed the puppy stage. Any ways we are getting a Rottie puppy in a couple weeks. I am going to crate train. We will let the dog out of course when we are home. I just want to know how many years I can expect to wait before I can leave her out all the time and not have all my stuff chewed up?

Depends on the dog they are all different. Talk to your breeder and pick the correct dog make sure the puppies are temperament tested and that should be the way to tell what your dog will grow up to be like.

I don’t have a Rottie but my one dog had the run of the house probably at 10 months but I have a nine month old pup that may never get run of the house at this rate he is way more active and he is into everything.

Is Attack Dog Training a Good Thing or Not?

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Attack dog training is used to make dogs useful for protection rather than to hurt people. Attack dog training is used to train dogs to attack on command. This training is used so people can command the dog to attack if there is some kind of danger present. Attack dog training is not used so a dog will go around and attack people at random without a good reason. Some attack dogs may seem like vicious animals, but most attack dogs are not vicious. However, on a command from the trainer or owner, the dog will attack to protect that person.

Professional and knowledgeable trainers have worked out methods for attack dog training. The goal of this training is for personal protection. Dogs that are trained properly can protect property and people. Attack dog training is not so easy, and it should be provided by the professionals who have great experience working with animals. Some of the centers that specialize in attack dog training work to train dogs on and off a leash. These centers do not often treat the dogs harshly in order to train them. Some breeds of dogs are better in attack dog training.

Attack Dog Training Takes Time, Patience And Skill

Dobermans, German shepherds and rottweilers are some of the breeds that make the best attack dogs. Other dogs can also be trained to be attack dogs. The temperament of the dog is more important than the breed of dog. Attack dog training usually starts when the puppy is about one year of age. The specialized training often comes after obedience training, but both types of training can be carried out at the same time. Attack dog training usually takes at least two weeks.

Attack dog training does not change the personality of the dog. If the dog was good around children before the training, it will be good around children after the training. Once the dog has been trained, it should not be left with other people unless one family member is there as well. The training will not change a sweet dog into a nasty dog. Although the people who train dogs are experts, they do not charge exorbitant sums for these services. People who are looking for security should consider training their dogs to provide this security. The dogs trained to be attack dogs will not only help to provide the security for a family, but they will be loving pets as well.

Rottweiler vs American Bulldog?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Okay I’m not ask which one would win in a dog fight. I’m asking Rottweiler vs American bulldog on size, strength, intelligence, and bite force. Oh and which one of the two is more likely to win in a tug a war lol

Rottweilers vary in size so much that the whole question becomes void.

Male rotties can range from 30 to 65 kgs depending on their actual frames and genetics.

Add on — Doh – TD’s. ha ha.
Like I wouldn’t know that when I deal with literally thousands.

Ok so maybe you mean – if you take a rottie of a particular size / weight and then put him against an American Bulldog of exactly the same size and weight who would win a tug of war.
Answer – I haven’t got a clue and am not particularly bothered, but I hope the bulldog would win.

Suus – the size / weights given are those bred by responsible people breeding within a breed standard. That probably accounts for about 10 to 15% of the rotties out there. The rest are not always within those accepted sizes bred by people known as byb’s who haven’t got a clue what the words breed standard means.

Help on Introduction for Speech About Rottweilers? I Can’t Think of Any Attention Getters?

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

I am doing a speech about rottweilers, and I can’t think of anything for an attention-getter for the introduction. Any ideas will be helpful. Thank you!

I would be quite happy for you to email me your speech and let me see if I can "correct" anything.

As long as your speech is positive then thanks from me and the rottweiler world for promoting this wonderful breed.

I am with rottweiler rescue trust and have friends who show & breed and see hundreds and hundreds. I have three here at the moment but always foster so continually have a turn around within my home.

How about starting with the fact that ….

They are one of the most tolerant breeds with children when brought up with them. FACT.

That they make super PAT (Pets as Therapy) dogs as most are calm around people.

That they are loyal, intelligent and just love to please – if you treat them correctly.

That they are the most handsomest dog breed there is …. lol… I’m biased.

Would love to see your speech anyway.

Add on — I do totally agree with "there is no cure"… one fo the things we are in danger of when promoting them is attracting people who do not understand the attitude needed to nurture them through to well balanced dogs.

What Is the Difference Between a German Rottweiler and an American Rottweiler?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

What is the difference between a German Rottweiler and an American Rottweiler?

German Rottweiler is TYPICALLY a term Backyard Breeders use to make their Rottweiler seem more special. Usually they call it a German "Block head" Rottweiler or something along those lines

Here is a great article about the difference between American/German Rottweilers
————–
German Rottweiler or American Rottweiler
If you own a Rottweiler you’ve probably been asked (on more than one occasion), "Is your Rottweiler a German Rottweiler or American Rottweiler?" When I was first asked the question I was a bit baffled because I thought that there was only one kind of Rottweiler. Then the all knowing individual I was speaking to proceeded to explain to me that German Rotties were shorter, stockier and have a bigger blockier head, and American Rotties were taller and leggier without as blocky a head. (Of course, there are several variations to this mythology – American Rotties have bigger ears, German Rotties have bigger teeth, you name it someone’s probably said it.)

Wow! I thought I’d really learned something that day. Well, I guessed Jericho must be a German Rottie because he had a really blocky head, and Sherman must be an American Rottweiler because he has pretty long legs. Now after hanging out in the Rottweiler community and discussing this issue with some friends who have been in Rotties for 20 years, it turns out my first impression was right. There aren’t any distinctive types of Rottweilers, and only one factor determines whether a Rottweiler is ‘American’ or ‘German’ – their place of birth. Rottweilers born in America are American Rottweilers just as people born in America are called Americans. Dogs born in Germany are German Rottweilers. Earth shattering, mind boggling stuff, huh? How can that be, you ask?

Here’s how. The breed standard that the American Kennel Club (AKC) has established for Rottweilers is extremely similar (almost identical) to that of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK aka the Rottweiler Club of Germany). The only inconsistency between the two standards is the height allowance. The AKC’s standard is a few centimeters different than that set by the ADRK.

The major difference between dogs bred in the US and those produced in Germany results from the fact that the ADRK is very selective about which dogs are *allowed* to reproduce, i.e. dogs have to pass certain physical and temperamental requirements before the owners can breed them. Although ethical American breeders follow similar guidelines, the vast majority of people who breed Rottweilers are high risk breeders who are either ignorant of the fact that a breed standard exists or simply do not care whether or not their dog falls within the standard. The indiscriminant breeding by these Americans produces Rottweilers who do not conform to the standard and who are highly inferior to those bred by American Code of Ethics breeders and especially German ADRK members.

While ethical breeders from each country probably have certain traits or aspects of their dogs that they prefer to enhance through breeding, the similarity of the breed standards for each country keeps these breeders in check and demands that they breed dogs who are within the standards established for the breed. If one were to take a Rottweiler born to an American Code of Ethics breeder and put it side by side with a Rottweiler born in Germany to an ADRK breeder, most people would be unable to tell which dog was born in Germany and which dog was born in America. Unless, of course, the dogs were facing away from the observer, then one could quickly determine which dog was born in Germany because tail docking is now banned in most European countries.

In summation while there are individuals in several countries who breed Rottweilers there is still only one breed or type of Rottweiler and that dog is called a Rottweiler. So the next time you take your Rottweiler for a walk around the block, and someone asks you if your dog is American or German, you can reply with confidence that your dog is ________ (fill in country of birth) because your dog was born in _________, or you can really throw ‘em for a loop like I do when I tell them my dog is a Texas Rottweiler. :)

What Would You Guys Say About These Rottweilers?

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Does this seem like a reputable breeder for rotties? http://www.floridarottweilerbreeders.com/fl-puppies-for-sale/?awkw=rottweiler%20puppy%20for%20sale&awca=FLB&gclid=CK3tkbjD_qQCFcXD7QodPAMViA – I appreciate all the help you guys have given me over the past week, I don’t plan to buy the rottweiler for quite a few months but I just want to know for reference. Thanks!!
I looked on the American rottweiler club website…no links to any breeders :\. At least none that I could find.
Karen, None of those breeders are in Florida. And I couldn’t find the recommended breeders on the Florida rottweiler clubs website…so….

I don’t like them at all.
they don’t care who buys them, most people have no business owning a Rott.
Sire and dam are not Ch. and most don’t even have Ch. bloodlines. Unless sire and dam are Ch. or working dogs that are good at what they do just pass on it.

Will add more in a bit.

ADD: What you can try is looking up your State or Region’s club http://www.akc.org/sitesearch/index.cfm?q=Rottweiler+club

Is There Honesty Such a Thing as a German Rottweiler and a American Rottweiler?

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

I got my puppy from a girl friend i use to work with and she said the dad is german the mom is american …They both looked alike to me.

Technicly no. There is one breed. However the standards may differ.

Standards ***

The German standard FCI/ADRK

Shoulder height for males is 61 – 68 cm (24.01-26.77 inches)
61 – 62 cm (24.01-24.4 inches) small
63 – 64 cm (24.8-25.19 inches) medium height
65 – 66 cm (25.59-25.98 inches) large = correct height
67 – 68 cm (26.37-26.77 inches) very large

Shoulder height for bitches is 56 – 63 cm (22.04-24.8 inches)
56 – 57 cm (22.04-22.44 inches) small
58 – 59 cm (22.83-23.22 inches) medium height
60 – 61 cm (23.62-24.01 inches) large = correct height
62 – 63 cm (24.4-24.8 inches) very large

The AKC/ARC breed standard

Quoting:

"Size, Proportion, Substance –Dogs–24 to 27 inches. Bitches–22 to 25
inches, with preferred size being mid-range of each sex. Correct proportion is
of primary importance, as long as size is within the standard’s range. The
length of body, from the prosternum to the rearmost projection of the rump, is
slightly longer than the height of the dog at the withers, the most desirable
proportion of the height to length being 9 to 10. The Rottweiler is neither
coarse nor shelly. Depth of chest is approximately 50% of the height of the
dog. His bone and muscle mass must be sufficient to balance his frame,
filing a compact and very powerful appearance. Serious faults–Lack of
proportion, undersized, oversized, reversal of size characteristics (bitchy
dogs, doggy bitches."

What Are the Laws on Owning a Rottweiler?

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

What are the laws in Western Australia on owning a Rottweiler? Are their any other things i need to know about Rottweilers? Any other issues i need to adress before i get a Rottweiler?

I haven’t got a clue about laws in Australia but I do know all about owning and issues of a rottweiler.

They do vary in temperament anyway through genetics, but whatever yours is, you need to be firm but fair. Remember the word NILIF and use it when the dog gets a bit pushy and above its station. NILIF is very very good for rotties.

Socialise your dog very well and that doesn’t mean necessarily going to meet dogs, it means being around many without reacting at all.

Do not overexercise. We see massive joint problems because of it. 5 mins per day per month of life for lead walk and then allow free play which is different.

Always feed a good diet preferably raw if you have the time to research that.

Always bring your dog up to let it know that YOU protect HIM / HER and not the other way round. This is very important in your relationship with your dog, and affects everything else in the dogs mind regarding its behavior.

Ask anything else you wish… you can get me on email if you wish.

Add on – sorry but I have to disagree with the "highly strung" and "viscous" label given to them here by little miss hatter.
Rotties do vary and some are quite high drive but a lot are horizontal they are so laid back. Try and do your research before buying.
